NYT End of Music Row

Accordion Store’s Departure Signals End of Manhattan’s Music Row

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/04/nyreg ... c-row.html

Been one article like this after an other but looks like this will be the last. Maybe someone else has old memories of 48th St. I'd set aside a day to take a subway up there just to window shop. I wouldn't even go in the stores sometimes as I had no dough and I knew I was a WOT (Waste Of Time) to the people there. Went many days in a row just to stare at a particular sunburst 345 with PAFs in someone's windows, maybe Silver Horland, and the row of '50s Strats up high in We Buy. 48th St was the sexiest peep show ever.

Soulless modern world kinda sucks.

I remember being 11or 12 yrs old my friend and I snuck onto a bus from Parsippany Nj .Took it in to the city just to window shop. This was going back to the early 70's.The infamous Gretch White Falcon hanging in the window for 1200.00 bucks.Every guitar you could imagine in that row of stores. We got home and Mom never found out :D

Used to make the trip regularly in my teens. Mandy's was always awesome as was We Buy Guitars.

Went up to see the tree in Rock Center and passed the old stores. Signage for Rudy's is still there but not much else. All gone

Sad, I remember my first time in NY heading straight to 48th street.

Denmark St in London was the same. That too is now going the way of 48th st.

I still see Rudy from time to time when he comes to gigs.

I saw that. I get the NY Times daily home delivery. Enjoyed the read very much. Sad that it's all gone now.

Ampmike revives a fond memory. I lived in Lynbrook, NY (Nassau Co.) and used to ride the bus with my friends down Sunrise Highway to Jamaica to get the subway to Manhattan (cheaper than the LIRR and more fun.) IIRC, we were no more than 12 years old when we started doing it (mid 1960's.) At the beginning, favorite spots were Greenwich Village, Central Park and Times Sq. Times Sq. led us to 48th St to discover Manny's, Sam Ash and the other places. It's true that Manny's had a low tolerance for customers who weren't there to buy. We'd look in the window wishing we could afford something.

I have no recollection of hiding our trips to NY from Mom. I think she knew and didn't say anything one way or the other. She grew up in Jackson Heights and probably thought nothing of a 12 year old riding the subway.

We should get drunk and do something to stop change.

Sad to see.

I wish I had made the effort to visit a lot of these shops before they went under.

What sad day in history in our instant gratification society.
