Another Champ-ish Build

Post by boots »

I just finished building yet another 5F1-type amp. This one is kind of a sticks and seeds build, with a lot of salvaged or left-over parts. The OT is from an old reel to reel deck, looks like it gives me about 4.5k on the primary with an 8 ohm load. The green caps are Tropicaps salvaged from on organ. Not sure what I think of it all yet, I need to play it some more.

Considering that you paid almost nothing for the parts (they were sunk cost from some other project or projects) and that it supplies passable tone, this is an undeniable success. Whether you end up liking it in the end is a whole other story. I'm sure that someone would be glad to take it off your hands or receive it as a gift. It's a nice tidy build. Besides, didn't you have fun doing it and wasn't that the main point of it?

Well, I finally got the family out of the house for a while and cranked it up. It sounds great! I think this is the best sounding Champ I've built yet.

I omitted the feedback loop - I'm not a fan of them in general. The salvaged caps and OT are winners, to my ears. From my research, it sounds like the lower Zpri on the OT would tend to favor the even-order harmonics, and I am guessing that is why it sounds sweeter than some of my other builds.

The only part I had to buy specifically for this build was the PT, so all in all it was a satisfying project.

Now, back to the 2x EL34 amp that has been sitting half-done since last winter....

Nice looking build! Glad to see recycling work out so well.
