Passtime

Post by sepulchre »

At my job I have to be alert but there's not much activity on my part. So, when I don't a project to think about and figure and do design work, I need to keep my hands busy.

So I got some pieces of steel and some files and wet or dry and went to work. This is simple mild steel from Home Depot so, since it really can't hold an edge for long, I'm calling it a letter opener.

When my daughter in law saw it she asked if I could make a letter opener for her.

The next couple of tries will be some sure enough Daggers of hardened carbon steel, one with a Rosewood handle (these are oak), the next with a Bocote handle.

Love the projects gents. I haven't made a knife for years but when I did I used old hand sickle and saw blades.

The dagger looks like a frog sticker. :D
Nice work on it.

Had a friend that made knives.

I have never seen a guy get more worked up over scrap steel.

The craftsmanship on the metal and wood were phenomenal.

Beautiful work there, John. I'm just getting into this so Damascus steel is way above my pay grade.
I wish I had a decent forge and anvil. The forge I could make but anvils are Expensive, large and room hogs. However, they're great for whacking coyotes.

well - if you can get your hands on a foot or 2 of old railway track - that can work as a small anvil if you bolt it down.

had a chunk of rail track left in the shed by previous owner - and I have used it as a mini-anvil many times.

whacked some simple blades out of rebar and a hot fire while back - also great for turrets!
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Cool stuff. John, make a Damascus hardware set for a guitar.

I'll watch. :)
