I don't know about you, but when I think Cat Stevens, Hall and Oates, and Linda Ronstadt, I think Rock and Roll.

"Rock and Roll" has become a pretty broad term. However, Linda Ronstadt famously covered Buddy Holley and Chuck Berry... Can you be any more R&R than that? Hall and Oates had hits with quieter stuff, but in live shows they rocked pretty hard.

Listening to NPR in a groggy half-awake state I thought I heard Carly Simon was in the in crowd this year too. Let'see . . . Carly & Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf - still turning out excellent music) were once an "item,", Carly & Hall & Oates toured together in 1995 - excellent show by the way - it oughta be one big love fest.
KISS, well of course. One of the most succesful rock groups ever. Not my favorite music but you can't deny they made a big splash. And Ace is actually a helluva guitar player. Wonder that they didn't get in years ago.
OK maybe I'm biased because I've done some - or in one case a lot - of work for some of these acts. And also because there's always "deserving" acts that are left out, year after year, so why not. Let 'em have their day. And Linda too, before her Parkinson's starts to make her wobbly.
And looking at that list of left-outs, kinda kooky to not have Link Wray, one of the founding fathers of rock n roll. Zombies right behind that. Butterfield Band too. Yes, for pete's sakes without a doubt. Not even mentioned, hasn't Procol Harum been left off the list since forever? Lots of good music from them from 1967 and right up to the present day. Oh well they'll all get in sooner or later. Sometimes I think those that make these decisions do it with a dart board plus pin-the-tail-on-the-rock-star method.

Glad you noticed! John Oates - a very underrated guitarist. He can burn up a Strat. Or a Suhr. Turned out a rare but very listenable album @ 10 years ago - "Phunk Shui." OK goofy title, but some damn good songs. By far not just the second banana to Hall.from Martin: Hall and Oates had hits with quieter stuff, but in live shows they rocked pretty hard.

On the pass list I would think that Deep Purple would garner a spot.
As well as Yes.
The Wiki page says the PBBB was nominated in 2012 and 2013?
I sometimes get confused between Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield.
The Zombies had a few hits.
Rod Argent went on to better things.

BTW, check out "Live From Daryl's House" on the web if you haven't yet. +1 on Deep Purple and Yes.
Re: 2014 Rock Hall Inductees- Opinions?
For those of us here who are actually old enough to remember, the Butterfield Blues Band was a seminal act that broke significant new ground for blues based R&R. You didn't hear them on AM radio, but there were some great NY FM stations that loved to play records they made. (BTW, remember, an FM radio in your car in the late '60's was a rare treat. Only rich people got the AM/FM radio option! Many car radios back in that era still had tubes!)
Look at the line up of stars besides Butterfield...Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop became well known, but even the "lesser" members Sam Lay and Mark Naftalin were important contributors to the kind of sound that provided at least an indirect underpinning for later blues based acts like the Allman Bros, J Geils, etc.
They were early adopters of released recordings of long jams...East West, Two Trains Running, other stuff.
I don't get it, these guys getting a pass.

I'm not disputing any of that, but to me a Hall of Fame (of any genre) should be a standout in that genre. I mean, I enjoyed the Run-DMC/Aerosmith "Walk This Way" remix, but I don't think that qualifies Run-DMC for the Rock and Roll HOF. Same as I don't think it qualifies Aerosmith for the Rap HOF (if there is such a thing...). I think there are plenty of deserving rock artists that have been overlooked (I mean, Deep Purple...whose first guitar chops DIDN'T include "Smoke on the Water"?martin manning wrote:"Rock and Roll" has become a pretty broad term. Anyhow, that's just a gut reaction; not trying to start an argument for sure. I know what opinions are often compared to, and I don't think mine stinks any less than anyone else's.

It's all in good fun. I agree that inductees should be standouts or pioneers (Paul Butterfield e.g. as Phil points out), but if the criteria were made too narrow, they'd have run out of candidates a long time ago. The real point is keeping the brand alive...

Who cares anymore?
Time to let it go...
Rock and roll has been dead and stinking for a long time...
Now if they can figure how to encapsulate Miley's twerking in concrete,
they'd be doing something...
No intended reference to the "stinking" mentioned above...

Please understand that IMO an answer to this question is of no practical relevance at all. - Max

+1 on Deep Purple and Yes
For anyone wondering if Daryl Hall can rock, check out Babs and Babs (1977) collaboration between Hall and Robert Fripp.

This Rock and Roll thing as become pretty diluted and questionable. Some of the greatest passed over like Deep Purple and Yes ? I remember seeing Cream and Deep Purple back in the days and DP just smoked Cream. BTW Cream headlined. Link Wray is so way overdue, it's a shame. Should it be called Radio Friendly Hall of Fame. All very talented recipients but..?

Rock n roll is now country mostly. At least somebody was smart enough to recognize the attraction. Since country stole rock, country sales have gone through the roof.Rock and roll has been dead and stinking for a long time...
It only follow that they'll soon be inducting the rock guys into the country HOF.
