Nine Second Ride
No not a bull ride.
A horse power ride.
What I think is a '53 Corvette.
9.53 in the quarter mile!
Near lane.

I know there is a few of us into cars including ToneMerc.
I don't have a budget for a muscle cars anymore but I loved the late 1970's when we cruised the "gut" * in Salem.
Lot's of Chevy/ Ford/ Mopar wars fought on that strip.
It was the favorite time of my life.
I had a 1965 Chevrolet SS Chevelle.
It didn't come with the original motor or I would have rebuilt it.
Instead I bought a bored out 283" a friend rebuilt that was exceptional.
That was my favorite car of all time.
Perfect weight (around 3,100 lb)
Muncie M21 4 speed and I think 3:53 rear end.
Anyway, just re-living my teenage years watching YouTube vids.
I still get chills when a well built V8 goes past.
* For you guys that are younger or our European brothers, the "gut" was a
stretch of road in town where we would gather and race each other over a short distance.
Usually much less than the 1/4 mile shown in the video.
Most of the time three gears, and then backed off.
There was a stretch of road under a railroad overpass that was segregated where we could get away with it.
Cops were always a present problem but most of the time back then they didn't bother us too much.

Re: Nine Second Ride
I have no idea what class, but I do remember way back in the sixties when they first cracked 200 in the quarter mile. Now they are doing it in half that distance.

Re: Nine Second Ride
Tom thats no Duntov cam 265 SBC for sure, from those numbers it could be around 640-650HP at the flywheel. Nothing like the old days, my favorite classes are Comp Eliminator, Nostalgia and Pro Stock.Structo wrote:No not a bull ride.

Here's one my favorite Youtube vids, even though it a Ford. It's a 297ci comp eliminator engine, watch the tach and the small variation in swing.

Here's another one, Jeff Taylor smoking the tires in his comp eliminator Grand AM against the Pro Mod Corvette.

Re: Nine Second Ride
Yep ADRL Pro Extreme PM class; must have working doors, 2200 lb min weight with driver, any power adder( nitrous, blower, turbo) and the carbon fiber body must resemble a production vehicle. It just translates into a funny car with doors really, most of these cars have 2500-3000+ HP.Structo wrote:Cool!
What class is that?
Pro Mod?

Re: Nine Second Ride
What kind of transmissions do these guys run now?
I remember the Lenco's with the multiple levers or the Pro-Glide autos.
I know it depends on the class they are running, I've just been out of the loop for a long while.
So many classes now.

Re: Nine Second Ride
Tom yes it does vary, the Lenco is dominate in ADRL Pro clases and HNRA Pro Mod along with high horsepower versions of the GM Powerglide. The Liberty Equalizer is the trans of choice for NHRA Pro Stock and is very popular in Comp Eliminator. For NHRA/IHRA class racing from a GM standpoint you will find racing versions of the PG, T350, T400, 2 speed T400, 700R4, etc.Structo wrote:What kind of transmissions do these guys run now?

Yeah, I meant Power-Glide.
Or as we used to call them Power-Slide.

Re: Nine Second Ride
One of my very best friends in high school had a burgandy '55 Chevy with a 409 cu in engine that was reportedly blue printed and balanced both. (the 409's were notorious for blowing)
It had a 4:56 rear end. IIRC, it had 475 hp at rear end. He had chrome headers sticking out the front wheel well area that were plated off where the plates could be unbolted for the drag strip.
It ran a 1/4 in high 11's. Really a neat car. It ran B modified production. I got to really run it wide open once. Great fun!
