When I was a kid and the mail would come I thought it was a really big deal that the mail for dad was addressed to Mr., to mom Mrs., and they called me Mstr.. They also called me Sir Lawrence of Meadowbrook.

They used to really fuck kids up. Was I a knight on a plantation? Hell no. I wasn't even qualified.

Ginger Arrington beat the shit out of me.

By the time I was going to school with kids my own age I thought I might be a giant. There was one time that a classmate was taller than me in lower school. He was held back twice in second grade.

How? How does a kid not pass second grade? He used to beat the shit out of me, then off to a Catholic school.

Margaret Summerau was nearly a foot taller but recognized my superiority. She beat the shit out of me once, but from then on the sisters beat the shit out of me for being left-handed, supposedly having to do with the sports gear all being right-handed.

Seriously?

My hand writing was illegible. I couldn't hold a pencil if it wasn't through a fist and exiting between my ring and pinky fingers. It still sucks, but the King just puts an "X" when he's illiterate.

We got to drink at school in high. There was a smoking area.. for 14 year olds. The same nun who had been my mother's teacher 20 or so years earlier told me that Jesus was a concept. My mother later told me that Sister Mary Kathryne (oddly my grandmother's exact name.. not the Sister part) had told her God was a concept.

They never beat me in HS, but they did allow me to daydream and think outside the room. I was told I wasn't fit for formal education because I refused to apply myself. Was that a challenge? What did it mean?

There is no God, and I never graduated from UGA. I never owned a helm nor gauntlet. I never sweated to pieces from the hot sun in a cotton field. I did become completely didactic but only about things that matter, and that is when I realized what it all meant.

They used to really fuck kids up. Kids these days don't stand a chance. They don't think for themselves and for my first 16 years all I did was think and get my ass beat by girls older than myself.

We had to walk through a blizzard up hill 7 miles to get lunch, most days 2 pounds of overcooked spaghetti & awful red sauce covered with a pound of shredded government cheddar cheese*, then back up hill through the blizzard to get back to school on time or else. MC Escher Memorial High. How I envied the kids at Morse Science High and Communist Martyrs High. What an easy life they led.

*The menu is the true part.

I used to sneak off to a drugstore with a lunch counter to share my lunch with a buddy: a pint of Southern Comfort. No wonder I flunked geometry.

Then they shipped me off to a private school.

I graduated in the top 10% of my class. However, that class was ranked 49th out of 50 in the nation for quality of education (New Jersey). Just goes to show Samuel Clemens was right: There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. Thanks Mr. Twain.

NickC, just for jollies what high school was that?

Mark Twain always one of my favorite authors. For a couple good laughs find "The Awful German Language". Lots more where that came from. It's in several places in the interwebs - just Google.

Sparta high School - Sparta NJ

Ol' Samuel was a brilliant, witty and wise man. A former residence of his was turned into a restaurant in downtown Buffalo NY. I dined there once. Also dined at an Inn frequented by Goethe back in the day .... in Austria. Sadly I did not see either of their ghosts. I should probably take a cue from Jon Lovitz (SNL) and report that I DID see their ghosts (yeah ....... that's the ticket). Would make for a better story.

Right up the road apiece, Sparta's in Sussex County right? Did a big big rock show @ 2004 in the Sparta Tech auditorium. All good except for an awful slap off the back wall - par for the course. I was at Mountain HS in West Orange. Got a couple astronauts out'a there, one's married to former Rep. Gabby Gifford. Also a TV Star Jay Ziering (BH12590), younger brother of my classmate Jeff Z. Who knows what else, some good folks & maybe some not so good... One of the class bullies eventually earned his way to a 10 year state prison stretch. Another bully wound up - an MD. Go figure. There was a class webpage but it wasn't maintained. One of the worrisome things was the attrition rate. With only @ 125 corresponding out of 360, there were 21 reported kaput at last report. One of the guys who taught me a lot about electronics, also lent me his B-15 for 2 years, was on that list.

Nothing like a book of Twain short stories. Lots of fun stuff & a couple very difficult to wade through. Like "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg." Good to read if I can't sleep. Instant zzzzz.

I grew near a very thick medical community. Bullies as MDs? Not at all surprising. It's a sad percentage that don't have the god complex.
