My dogs freak out too. We turn up the music, which they don't seem to mind.stelligan wrote:We hate the 4th of July.........

Re: I love my dogs
I have no idea how our dogs deal with it because I get sucked into playing right before the celebration in the park where they light them off.
However our 7 month old Great Dane gets real nervous when I test amps........

Re: I love my dogs
But to turn this thread into something worthy of the title, I don't think you will ever find a friend better than a dog.
I strive to be the person my dog already thinks I am. To him, I am perfect, but sometimes disappointing. He lives for when I come home and spend some time petting him and then going "Daddy's gonna get ya" and he'll run up and down the hall and go crazy.
Dogs exist to remind humans we're most happy when we're caring for others.

No cure, but like Lefty said - loud jams or an action show cranked on the home theater can help distract them. Lotsa huggin' lately for my 95 pound lap dog.......
People in my neck of the woods just go overboard!

Moosh - my youngest pound rescue doesn't get scared. She gets pissed and barks...

Re: I love my dogs
Our dogs (down to two now) get a bit nervous but don't freak out from fireworks.
Dogs are an excellent judge of character.
If my dogs don't like someone it triggers internal alarms.
I've shown him before but this little guy, Shadow is one of the best dogs we have ever had.
He is also the smartest dog we have ever had.
He can sit, stand, beg, roll over, speak, spin around, fetch, etc.
Has a very big vocabulary.
He knows what is what and will go get what you tell him to get.
Although I did tell him that Timmy was in trouble and had fallen down a well, but he didn't get that one....
He has grown into a scruffy thing but we love him very much.

Here's my son's boxer pup who's now 6 months old. I refer to him as my practice grandchild. As my son is working and going to school, I get to dog-sit a lot, and love it. I've had many good dogs, but this little (but growing rapidly) goofball is friendly to people and other dogs, and just melts everyone's heart.
He's always happy to see me, and his stubby little tail doing his helicopter imitation just fills me with joy.

My dog is odd.
Avatar, 60 lb shep mutt.
She likes the noise, one of the rare times we hang out on the porch at the front of the house with her tied to a column.
She thinks she's a "war dog".
She likes firearms as well.

We used to use Rescue Remedy for the period around July Fourth. It worked for our German Shepherd mix and border collie mix.stelligan wrote:We hate the 4th of July.........

This is Frankie. She is now 14 years old and sleeps a lot. She's still in good shape, but age is really showing. I don't like the odds on longevity at this point and don't know what I'm going to do when the time comes. I work at home most days and she's the one who quenches any sense of being alone.
Then there are the wild animal visitors to our back yard. She goes nuts when they are here.
She does surprisingly well when it storms, often burrowing under a blanket. Generally, she refuses to walk in the rain, even light rain, so that can be a problem. 4th of July, we are far enough from most fireworks that it is a minor thing even though we live inside city limits.

They're just too damn cute.

Beware of Hunter, a thermomoronic parsons jack russel terrier
specialized in 50's rats-nest amps
and digging out rats on the river front
4th July is quiet here, but I live by the river front and this city celebrates a lot of events with really loud fireworks. It is like they want to wake everyone up in the next city.
The fireworks are soon over, but more of a problem is just how completely legless-drunk everyone gets and all the broken glass from smashed beer bottles afterwards.
