Whats your go to amp???

Post by ampbldr2 »

Whats your go to amp? I have 2 home brew amps and a marshal dsl401 combo. 1-18w tmb head on top of a 2x12 sourmash cabinet. This amp is very bass heavy and near impossible to play at low volumes because it sounds terrible. I tame it with a weber mini mass attenuator. Im considering turining it into a trex.

My other amp is a high octane in a single 12 sourmash combo 18w style that i play all the time and is my go to amp all the time. THis is probably because it sounds really good semi clean and pushed with pedals and delay at low volumes.

Im considering building a rocket but these are like twice the volume of a 18 watt so i may not lilke it for home use.

So what is your go to amp at home?

My go to amp at home is my Rocket Reverb with octal power section into an open back 212 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's.

The Normster layout version.

Changes with the mood. AC30 with added top boost lately, usually a Marshall, and sometimes lil Egnater with another preamp in front. That is actually the fun one. I have a Pod thing that works as an amazing sound deviner for other worldly distortion tones strapped to the Egger. Clip monster.

Express with 1x12 SRO loaded closed back cab, Tele. Wish I had more SRO's for a bigger cab!

1965 Vibro Champ when I am practicing by myself. With a TS-9, I can get some fairly decent lead tones and still hear my studio monitors.

For band night, it is always, my Express clone.

For over a decade I played nothing but my Peavey Classic 50.
Then, about six/seven years ago I picked up a Carr Rambler and have used it nonstop ever since since. 8)

The last little while it's been my Magnatone 213 clone. Before it was the vibrochamp for practicing like Gibsonman63 said.

The Green Hornet and Blondie work well. All other amps collect dust now.

I'm really digging my 2 holer Rocket reverb through my 2X12 Avatar open-backed cab with a vintage 30 and a G12H30.

my twin reverb build is main gig amp.
the low power tweed super head build resides in rehersal room mainly.
currently building a non reverb chieftain head, can't wait to see how it messes up my habits

Small rig: 6V6 plexi (no negative feedback) combo with a Hellatone G12H30 and a standalone all octal reverb unit - seems like using an old 6SL7 as the cathode follower/buffer stage adds a nice touch to the dry signal.

But when I can 'go for it,' I'll take my 'MonsterAQ5' head that runs 6 cathode-biased 6AQ5's in the power section and an EF86 front end into the 2x12, which runs a pair of Hellatone G12H30's.

Guitar - Fender Reissue Sunn Model T w/ matching 4x12, Gibson Les Paul Standard '91 honeyburst

Bass - Ampeg SVT head (Skunkworks Anniversary 1987) w/ matching 8x10, Earnie Ball Musicman '97 Stingray bass

All stock nothing special, gig'able, and in the event... replaceable.
Well, more so then anything else I own.
