Any online stores in the UK?

Post by Tdale »

Are there any online stores in the UK, selling components needed for amp making (resistors, caps, pots, transformers, amp corners, knobs, jewels etc. etc.)

Anyone from the UK here?

The point is that they are physically located in the UK, so that the goods doesn't have to be shipped abroad...

ampmaker.com has some transformers and parts. Otherwise both Farnell and RS will deliver to any personal adress ... but so will any EU based company.... any goods paid in one EU country shall not revoke further taxes in another EU country.
There's aslo some transformer suppliers operating on Ebay.co.uk that inly delivers in the UK....
it's only us outside EU that have to pay all these insane postage and handling fees...............

EDIT: Sorry - just forgot about www.watfordvalves.com ...... a bit pricey to my taste , though...

Been a while since I ordered in the UK - try Farnell or RS Components.
Not sure about dedicated amp building supplies.

Hot Rox UK
Watford Valves
Allparts UK (mostly guitar stuff but some amp bits)
WD Music (again mostly guitar stuff)
Rapid Online
Farnell
RS
Maplin

But, if you can't get what you're looking for from Farnell or RS, I've always found that it's usually better to go international.

But I live in Norway, and that means 25% sales tax, and possibly import tax too, since we're not in the EU.

I have a friend who studies in the UK...:)

Hi Tommy....
I thought that was your inkling, when you asked as you did...

First - any EU country that exports to Norway is supposed to deduct the national VAT, - and we have to pay ours.. unfortunately!
The UK now has 20%, Germany 19%, as opposed to our 25%......
For internal sales within the EU, one is supposed to pay e.g. the German VAT for goods bought in Germany, - if shipped to the UK, there shall be no further taxes, except postage.
It is the fact that Norway is outside the EU, that invokes extra handling fees for customs papers, - postage from inside to outside EU is also quite substantially higher...
This means that you can order parts not only from the UK, but all over EU, have them sent to your friends address in the UK, - except for the situations where a company refuses to ship to an address that differs from your VISA or credit card address - there are a few of those, too.....

As for customs, there is rarely an actual customs fee for electronic parts into Norway, - but still there's a handling fee.......
Talk about the devil wanting his share.... always.....

Hotroxuk - Valves, Valve Sockets
Maplin - Switches, Shielded Wire
RS - Tag Strips and Mini SRBP Boards

That opens up more options.
These on-line stores all run in English language:

- RS components because you can always see a data sheet to know what you are getting. Very good customer service. Especially good for Keystone tagstrips and boards, as James mentioned.
- For small quantities I go through www.tubetown.de in Germany, the service is immediate, low shipping costs and you can pay through paypal too, so you may be able to get around the UK address credit card problem through that portal.
- It is a pleasure to deal with Philip of Bluebell Audio, although I seem to recall that it is more of an e-mail based order system.
- As already mentioned here, Barry of Ampmaker has excellent value products and is great to deal with. I think he is taking a two month break at the end of March.
- If I am having trouble finding odd parts I look at Banzai Effects which are a bit slower and sometimes to so well stocked.
- TAD have a fast professional service.
- There are other Ebay based sellers such as Solasound in the UK that you could check out.

That should keep you busy!

Use them all the time, brilliant "above the call of duty" service from Phil.

Also excellent are http://modulusamplification.com

Both are in Scotland, the home of 1st class service in the UK, apparently.

Solsound are good for cab parts, http://www.solsound.com/
I get all my Tolex and hardware from here, Sol is a great guy too, there is an eBay shop, but it is only 10 miles from me, so I pop up there.

You can order online bulk supplies from Mouser, they have a UK office too, who are very helpful. If you are putting together a big project, their BOM tool is a great time-saver, you can save your projects too.
Over £50 ships free and all duties paid too. An order I placed last Monday arrived Wednesday by Fedex from Texas via Paris, France. Incredible!

I thought about ordering parts from the UK, have them shipped to my friend who lives there, and have him bring them home to Norway, as "his own" parts... :)
