Mark Knopfler

I've listened to Carlton's "Last Night" 700 times, Several of Ford's albums 800 times.

Could somebody tell me the "must have" Mark Knopfler album?

Or for that matter, Sonny Landreth or any other guitar giant they like.

I've got a number of the solo albums. They're all kind of close, but not quite up to Dire Straits standards. I like Making Movies and Brothers In Arms the most. For end period Dire Straits, I think the On The Night DVD is very good.

Mark Knopfler is really fine, no doubt about it. I tend to like some of the more out of the way pickers, like Rory Gallagher, and Gary Moore. Speaking of albums, one of my prizes is an original (bought by my Dad) 1968 BB King "Live at the Regal" LP. I dig playing that one thru my 1965 Lafayette all-tube (16, count 'em!!) stereo, although those 40 year old electrolytics tend to turn into tiny little grenades....man, do they stink when they eviscerate themselves!!

You like guitar music? I've wore out all my favorites. Can you think of any "must have" albums that really make you happy?

I keep hearing about Gary Moore. Is there an album that you like?

I'm serious, I buy an album with one good song for $10 or more and I get nasty and resentful. I like albums like Mystic Mile or Blood on the Tracks or Stan Getz and Charlie Bird do the Bossa Nova. Every track knocks you down. That kind of stuff.

I don't want this to sound like a plug, but that's exactly why I subscribe to Rhapsody. It's a good way to check out an album before you buy. It's also a great research tool when somebody mentions some obscure artist or song that you've never heard of. Best $10 a month I ever spent.

I'll look into Rhapsody, though it sounds pretty spendy. Like you say, maybe you make it up in satisfaction with what you buy. Vintage Guitar has reviews every issue that seem pretty right on to me. I remember years ago Rolling Stone published their top ten Rock and Roll albums of all time that excluded Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt Pepper.

Can't trust them all......

Hey, are you familiar with the Stan Getz album I mentioned with Charlie Bird? If not you need to be being a tenor man. I've been listening to that album since 1960 when I started alto sax. Hear something new every play. Wonderful. And good guitar licks too. I never could understand JC's music when I played horn. I'm too simple for all that complexity. Stan Getz is melodic start to finish. The album is in re-release on Atlantic/Verve. If not I'll burn you one.

Shangri-La is my favorite MK album and one of my favorite CD's of all time. It is the album that really got me turned onto the whole Komet and Trainwreck mystique.

I like Knofflers last 3 solo projects the best. Amazing tones throughtout.
I also like South of I 10 for Landreth. His tone was a little less processed on the early cds.

I grew up in DC in the 70's and was fortunate enough to see Gatton many times; can't say enough about him (His bass player John Previti taught bass to the player in the only money-making unit I ever was in.)

+1 on Danny Gatton as well as "Chester and Lester" which is Chet Atkins and Les Paul. That album is just phenomenal.

I would recommend "The Hellecasters" as well, especially the first two albums. The first is "Return of the Hellecasters" and the second is "Escape From Hollywood."

Marc Bonilla had two solo albums in the 90's that were also amazing. The first was "EE Ticket" and the second was "American Matador."
