Not sure if this fits in this thread, but....
A friend of mine recently commented that since we now have two states (WA and CO) where pot is "legal"....
Pot is still hugely popular, and if the gov't would make it legal and tax it, like they do with tobacco and whiskey, then hey, that would be a pretty good source of tax revenue.
Of course, I guess all those pot smokers with emphysema would probably drive health care costs up even more.
Oh well, it's just a thought.

My father (RIP) always said you could solve all the problems of the world by requiring politicians who wanted to pass a new law first to repeal two laws. He wasn't wrong. We are drowning in legislation and gasping for ideas.

Yep, and guess what?Firestorm wrote:My father (RIP) always said you could solve all the problems of the world by requiring politicians who wanted to pass a new law first to repeal two laws. He wasn't wrong. We are drowning in legislation and gasping for ideas.
Criminals don't obey laws, that's why they are called criminals.....
"We need more gun laws!"
Nope, we need less criminals.
I have been following the new law in Washington since it is my neighbor to the North.boots wrote:A friend of mine recently commented that since we now have two states (WA and CO) where pot is "legal"....

Before people get all giddy with the possibility of being able to buy their favorite herb at a local head shop and smoke it to their delight, most private companies will still do pre-employment drug screening and THC is a big red flag.
And since it stays in your system so long it would be stupid to chance it.
Not to mention random drug screening which most companies do.
Their insurance companies insist on a drug free work place.
This new law has a lot of ramifications.
They are saying that the public employee unions (gov workers) are looking at this law as well as the police unions.
Not all a bed of roses at all.
The governor is still waiting on the Federal Attorney General's position on this new state law and whether they will leaves states alone that have legalized it.
Because according to federal law, marijuana is still a Schedule I narcotic.

LeftyStrat,
One question, if you will. Do you perceive that greekie's comment was in opposition to what you just said? I most certainly do not. I think you guys are in agreement.
Where I live we pay separately for garbage pickup.
Here's one example where I'd like to see a change, as it would affect me personally (well, for just a few more years). We are a homeschool family. I do not mind paying for public education. In fact, I think it is very important. What I do mind is paying for that while also absorbing the cost of educating our own children. I believe there should be a temporary exemption from taxes that pay for education while I'm separately (and fully) paying for my own children's education. We are not consuming what we've been paying for.
Your example of food stamp usage is exactly the kind of thing greekie was referring to as a valid use of tax revenue. I don't understand why you think anyone in this discussion is trying to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater.'

I wasn't suggesting anyone was, I think we're in agreement.

Things everyone needed were cheap or nearly free at one time, until they were provided by someone else. Someone else can always afford to throw away the bank.
