I saw a warm up band called Alison Wonderland in Houston back in the early '90s. They warmed up for Johnny Winter but were called back for two encores. The singer was Fabulous - sort of Joplin like growl & soul. I wonder if there's any connection.Structo wrote:How about Carolyn Wonderland?

But if you like the Joplin sort of thing, check out Becky Barksdale. (Sorry no links.) She's got that, and plays the greaziest blues licks on a down-tuned Strat at the same time. From the same town too Port Arthur TX - uncanny. Becky played for a while in Michael Jackson's band.

My current favorite band, Lake Street Dive with Rachael Price. Saw them a few month ago. Many Youtubes to chose from. Here's one I'd never heard.

Re: Woman tone
I will definitely have to look more into Lake Street Drive!
A unique voice and a great talent: Phoebe Snow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3naBhcnBGE I first noticed her way back when she did some work with Paul Simon.

In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Re: Woman tone
You found Becky - excellent!
Aug. 2005 Becky Barksdale band was opening act for 2 nights at House of Blues on Sunset. (I was working for the headliner.) I invited Rick Turner to the 2nd show. We stood in the crowd & got an earful - just terrific! All that and she's cute as a button.
Thanks JoeCon for mentioning Genya Ravan. "Eye of the Needle" from 10-Wheel Drive is still stuck in my head. Now Genya's a white haired (rockin') granny hanging out in Saugerties NY, just down the road from Woodstock.
Gotta put in a mention here for some folkies. Jean Redpath from Scotland. And the McGarrigle Sisters from Newfoundland. All wonderful.

Re: Woman tone
There are so many but when the rubber meets the road, i.e. my paycheck turns to actually buying and then playing over and over, Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt do it for me. In particular Bonnie's voice on her first 4 albums is just ridiculous. I had only known her for her whisky and cig's voice until one day on a whim I picked up her first few albums. Sheesh... beautiful. Shame she lost that through the years (long before she got "old" if you will). Don't get me wrong though...nothing wrong with roughness in one's voice female or male. Love that too.
