This amp at volume plays, although grainy and awful, when strummed lightly but then starts leading into a coughing gnarl when you start hitting it with signal.

OT removed and primary tapped on a battery shows nothing at secondary. Flyback done flewback. Don't let it hit you!!

I have to wonder if the Marshall it was plugged into has no faults at all.

I guess this would be to cover the case where one end of a cable is plugged into the amp and the other end is laying on the floor.

What's that Miles, a "fat one"? Yes, in fact I already have, many many times. I guess my turban is out of adjustment. But I can't adjust it, it's "fixed" which means it's broke. Guess I'll have to try a different color.
So. Just what is this magical circuit that matches output tubes along with channel selection? Don't answer, please don't. I know the answer.
I'm sure you do Miles but for others, here goes. FWIW early Boogies HAD a bias adjustment trim pot. Randall's just trying to cover his ass since @ 1979 by leaving it out. He's worried someone's going to dial the bias up to plate-reddening currents then beg for new tubes on warranty. OTOH most Boogies leave the factory biased dead cold. I mean 12 to 15 milliamps on a 6L6. So now you're invited to try all varieties ROYGBIV plus grey white & brown until you hear the "color you like." Phooey on that. Randall may send his posse after me but I put trimpots in Mesa/Boogie amps & get 'em to bias up right. So there, take that Mistah Smith!

Mesa's Chief Engineer Mike Bendinelli & I are old friends. I don't pester him with the way they do things, and when I need an answer to a tough-dog repair he has delivered the goods.

Good answer. :)

At MkIIb the wheels fell off the train. The ones I bought were not useful for anything dirty. The notes ran together for that famous by now smerging thing that sounds like smear in every key.

This amp is really beautiful. If it were my own amp I would have to start a magic show in there. Nothing up mah sleeves! foop! (amp rabbit)
