I dig Carlos' playing. But not ALL of it. When he's on, he's great. When he's not on, not so much.
Seeing as how this thread has meandered in the direction of other players (like Page and Beck) ...... I'd be remiss if I didn't add that I never heard/saw Roy Buchanan when he wasn't 100% ON. Saw him live once (opened for Nektar at Luna Park NY many moons ago) and he was even more impressive live than on record. If you know his playing, you'll appreciate what a great achievement that was. RIP Roy.

Yup. Vince Gill. John Fogerty. David Gilmour, George Harrison. Any number of guys who write then learn a solo and repeat it at each performance. Gilmour has stated that he feels that performance is why people come to concerts and they should be given the best. Not experiments and improvisation. For instance I kinda like John Coltrane (Tenor Sax) on some of his albums but he was pretty awful in person. I saw Jimi Hendrix twice. He stunk once. Too stoned I guess. On the other hand I think Larry Carlton is great live but stinks on all but one of his albums. I think I own them all......pretty bad for the most part. So many of these guys think they are Mozart for crying out loud. Like every fretted utterance is some sort of messianic statement. Not really; more like outsized portions of ego driven drivel.NickC wrote:I'd be remiss if I didn't add that I never heard/saw Roy Buchanan when he wasn't 100% ON. .

Got a soft spot for Carlos - we did a stadium gig with him once in the late 70's. Marshall Tucker was the headliner. We got the gig because Pat Travers was messing up on the tour - Playing late into Carlos' set. Never been one of my favorite guitarists harmonically, but sonically. I'll never forget the first time I heard "Oye Como Va" on the radio. Killer tone/sound.....
I'm the long haired guy in the background that was already going bald in my early twenties. The Yamaha he was playing on that gig seemed like a better sounding guitar than what he uses now...

Of course there is always Greg Allman. I thought it was Glen Cambell. Bless their hearts.
