Well Tom you hit many nails on the head with that post. As a director of facilities for the last 21 years I am very aware of the EIFS debacle. Frankly I winced when builders went to Dryvit EIFS but to be honest, most of the leak problems were due to poor application by architects who didn't understand the system.

I agree that some unions are great but others suck big time. The UAW isn't a great one. When I was a petrochemical plant pipe fitter in Texas back in the 70's the local union was selling journeyman cards without any apprenticeship at all. I had to fix many a screw up by guys that bought some tools at the pawn shop and said "Yesterday I couldn't spell pipe fitter, today I are one". The problem with unions is the same problem with federal governement. When you put together a large pool of taxes or dues in one place, slugs come out of the woodwork to scoop some up. Corruption is a part of the game.

Now on the styrofoam accent pop outs, I have a personal rule....."No styrofoam below the 10 feet elevation mark. Day to day use of a building will damage low level plastered styrofoam. Heck, even when you put it up high it can be a problem. I had a resort once that had three styrofoam bells in a bell tower about 25 feet off the ground. One day it was raining styrofoam balls and when we got the boomlift to check it out some birds had hollowed out the big bell for a nest. They did the same thing to some corbels too.

Heheheh, yes I have seen birds damage the foam as well.

To tell the truth, I hate that crap. I would rather form it out of framing and lath, and put real stucco on it. It really doesn't save that much labor due to the steps involved. The materials certainly aren't cheaper.
But architects love that anything they can dream up can be carved out of a foam block so it is useful to them, especially for cornice molding and other shapes that are hard to hand tool.

I agree, many unions are corrupt, mine is a huge international cement mason & plasterer union but I think we are a little insulated from the "bad guys with bent noses" out here. But I agree, any large organization seems to go down that path given enough time.

I just hope this economy picks up.

I haven't had any work in a few months now. It isn't uncommon to slow down in the winter but this year, the jobs dried up in October.

I'm 52 now, looking forward to getting out of the rat race soon. But, looking at my 401K and other holdings is very depressing right now.
My pension is insured but the others will take years to recover.

I hope the new guy in the white house will do something to stimulate this economy or even better the private sector rises above this recession and starts throwing money my way soon. :D

C'mon, Twang... you're either part of the solution or part of the problem.

Trade that Yaris for an F150 to help the "struggling" car companies and the "struggling" oil companies.

Go on vacation and toss some money around.

Conspiracy theory du jour: (That's French for you Texans. Are the French still considered to be evil?!)

Remember, the public's attention span is less that 15 seconds. I'd peg it at 12-13 seconds. Alternative energy was all the rage when oil was $144 per barrel, just a few short months later oil is $44 per barrel. Lots of investors went big for alternative energy, some can afford to take a hit on it, many can't. I'll say this: Alternative energy that was a good investment with oil at $144 per barrel is a sh*t investment with oil at $44 per barrel.

The painfully short public attention span figures in to all this, they can't figure out why something that was a good idea in July is a crappy idea in January. It's not like they even think about it, they don't. Gas was expensive more than 13 seconds ago. When I checked 13 seconds ago it was cheap.

Alternative energy is gonna get filed under, "We tried that. It didn't work."

Some John Birchers I know in Tennessee parked their F250 and their Lincoln Town Car when gas went over $4.00 per gallon. They're drivin' 'em now, they say, "We knew it would go back down." You knew, huh? Then why don't you go out and buy a new F150? Rumor has it Ford can use the money...

Here's the conspiracy theory. Know who the Enemy Du Jour is? Backtrack a bit. Remember how far Bush bent over backwards to go after Hussein? If Hussein was still in play we wouldn't have to worry about Iranian nukes, the Iraqi / Iranian pissing match would go on ad infinitum and they'd be out of our hair. Worst case, if they didn't keep it between themselves the nice Israelis could send a few jets over and bomb suspicious looking industrial buildings. It's not like there's any love lost there. Anyway... run the price of oil up, that makes the oil companies enough cash to last ten years. Then run the price of oil back down. So what if the economy hiccups over the high price of oil from back when it was high, hell, we're Americans, we can take it. Our boy Hugo Chavez doesn't have the income he had six months ago, not even close. That'll teach 'im to invite the Russians into the Western Hemisphere, commie pinko %&@###!!!!

Hey, waidaminnit... I'm a commie pinko myself!!

Some Vermonters and New-yorkers dudes have been known to come to Sherbrooke on the week-ends with fake students passes just to tour the old city and connect to the locals...some even close the night in them after hours mafioso bars with willing and able naked girls dancing on their laps...

What is the world coming to?

But the attentions span on global warming or climate change which ever PC term you like, seems to endure the test of hyperbole.

Where I live we are expecting temperatures lower than we have had in 15 years dipping down to the low teens and 3 to 6 inches of white stuff expected on the valley floor by Sunday.

Last year the Cascade mountain range received a record snowfall.

But Al Gore and his minions continue to spread the myth that we are heating the earth too much.
Now going green is big business and everybody wants on the wagon.

Gee I wonder where Mr. Gore has his money invested?
Certainly not in his coal mines.

My states Governor, Sleepy Ted Kulongoski, is on the wagon as well and is earmarking huge sums of money into solar and wind generated electricity/

Meanwhile he wants to tear out a few hydro dams down in the Klamath basin so a few fish can swim upstream to a lake that is too warm and turbid to support the fish anyway.

The greenies want to tear out a bunch of dams on the Snake river as well.

Hydro is our only completely self renewable power resource that is completely green in that it doesn't cost us in fuel and emissions.
There are a few small wind farms but they aren't totally self reliant since the wind doesn't blow all the time.

A few short years ago we had the cheapest power rates of the nation due to our prolific hydro power. But in recent years they have raised the rates and also due to Enron's mismanagement our power utilities have had to raise rates to recoup huge losses due to white collar thievery.
None the less our state still burns coal for 40% of it's power needs......

But yet, they want to tear out the dams so a few fish can spawn.

A few years ago they decommissioned our only nuclear power plant because the greenies were afraid it might go Chernobyl.

Pretty soon we will be back to horses and buggies and the guys that now drive the garbage trucks will be walking down the roads scooping up horse shit.

Twang, you are a piece of work. Remind me to never include your negative ass on any project team where positive results are required. Capitalism will be right back where it was soon as it is the only system that really works. Boy, you must really hate it to constantly put it down like you do. By the way, which picture below is you?

Somehow I'm thinking your IQ must be below 100 to not know the difference between volunteerism and government forced redistribution. I support the former and certainly never the latter. Truly Twang, your posts are very borish and childlike. Who dresses you in the morning?

Ice ages are cyclical. We are a thousand years overdue for one. The last one allowed a glacier over 100 feet thick to form on top of and further south than New York City. The natural order is for us to be in the middle of an ice age now. In the last one, a large percentage of life died off. Because of industrialization we have postponed our ice age cycle. Would someone please tell me why this is a bad thing? But put down that joint before you do.

Bob i'm telling it like it is...

I'm not negative...i'm...huh...erg...lucid...

Capitalism is the best system but...you need some regulations.

Otherwise the big boys rack up the billions...and you get fucked...

If you don't agree with me now...you may change your mind within a couple of years...Just wait Bob my friend....give it a little time...

You may see it differently then...

We all have our own perspective of course...It may be rosy in your neck of the wood...

Capitalism will be back on track eventually, stronger than ever...but pride will be affected...
