FWIW Passfan, and it may be of no consolation right now, but I have a friend who, some years ago, was in a very similar situation as your brother. He got good diagnostics, treatment, and follow up and is doing very well today. Hang in there and try not to dwell on the unknown.

Medical treatments have advanced significantly. As others have suggested, help your brother seek out the best care possible. It can make a difference. Thanks for all the help guys. I am lucky as our youngest brother is a doctor and is friends with a lot of the oncologists at the facility where he is at. His diagnosis is adnocarcinoma and is a particularly nasty cancer. I thank all for the prayers as I feel I need to pull out all the stops

Keep a positive mental attitude, at least don't show your fear to your brother. I went through surgery for skin cancer and my wife was like a rock for me and gave me a sense of calm even though I was shaking in my boots. It wasn't until after I was cancer free that she confessed she was as scared as me but didn't want to put more stress on me than I already had.

Make him laugh. He needs your strength right now.

Thought I would post an update due to the outpouring of support and love from the forum. I couldn't ask to be associated with a better bunch of people and I am fortunate to be a part of this community. Since going in last saturday my brother was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. It is also in his stomach. His first and major symptom was the inability to swallow as his esophagus has been pinched closed by swollen lymph nodes. This condition of not being able to eat has left him low on iron and anemic. The first major hurdle was a stomach tube to bring his iron and other nutrients back up. This was necessary in order to scan and stage his cancer to determine his treatment. His tube was finally put in yesterday and he is receiving his "paste" starting today. He is taking it as well as expected but is preparing for the worst. He is also uninsured. I have been researching the various resources for cancer patients and the financial office has applied on his behalf to various government and private charities. The hardest part is helping our parents get the information they need to realize this isnt quite the "death sentence " they thought it was. It will be a hard road for all of us but it is being made easier by people < just like yourselves < who are stepping up and caring.

You say he is unmarried and I know how I handle things. Stay on him when he feels the worst. We are pretty stuborn like that.
