Oscilloscope Help

Post by Munga »

I am planning on buying an oscilloscope, and I need a little advice.

I can get a Philips PM3350 for $200 in excellent condition with all the hardware and manuals. I also could probably bargain that down.

On the other hand, I can get a Tektronix 7613 for $50. The problem with it is that the digital functions do not work, but all the analog functions work fine.

Any ideas?

for most tube amp service and construction all you need is a 20Mhz Dual Trace Scope. The trick is no matter what you buy make sure to get it new or have it calibrated so you know what you're working with. The cheaper ones on ebay unless you are comfortable with servicing the scope in house it's often more expensive to get it up and running then buying a working one. Scope service is billed at $65+hr.

You can find inexpensive new scopes at almost any parts dealer or fry's electronics. I found a demo closeout last febuary for $100 and the kid threw in a set of probes and a warranty for free.

not to say deals can't be found but two bad deals would have been a new scope.

I don't know that Philips scope in particular, but we have several other Philips models at work - with good results.
I'd be rather wary in bying a scope which already has a fault, even if TEC is one of my favourite brands, but still....
If you'd have to have it repaired/serviced by a TEK service shop, your bill will most certainly be a LOT higher than the price for that Philips!
