Tonic Amps

Post by Tubetwang »

Watching Animal Planet last night with my fiance...Were avid swimmers/surfers and love to watch any ocean related flics.

"Sharkman" was featuring this guy from South Africa who was scuba diving into the ocean and touching Great White Shark using what he called Tonic Immobilisation...It changed my views on sharks... 8)

My question for Dartanian is did you name your amps on this technique?

Just curious...

Interesting find. I remember seeing that show a while ago, but the technique's name never caught me. At the tip of every sharks' nose is a huge bundle of what's called the "ampullae of Lorenzini" which are sensory organs that detect electric fields. I would imagine that stimulating the ampullae in different areas of the sharks body would possibly equate to the touch of another shark or as described by scratching the "doggie spot", make them comfortable with your presence or subdued to some extent.

But anyway, the name was not derived from this technique. Pretty fascinating schtuff though.

I didn't finish my thought, so here it goes:

I've seen an a bunch of different shows where people grab/rub/hit the nose of a shark and they pretty much zoom away or kind of slip into a trance. It might be compared to a kick in the groin

The name is derived from the meanings of the word Tonic...tonal center in music/first note of a scale, an elixir that restores health or invigorates the body, etc. I also like the how it sounds.
