LOL is right. I'm from NY, so I speak "Northern" pretty well and don't usually have much trouble with the way they say it further north. We were visiting friends in Boston (they're from Calif.) We went to a restaurant for dinner, a fish restaurant. So, the waitress is going over the specials. We haven't see our friends for a while, and I'm not paying good attention. Next think I know, she's offering shock for dinner. What? I'm thinking, she's gonna put my fingers in the outlet -- and and it's going on the check? What kinda place is this? What kinda fish is shock?

Man it sucks that Weller quality is falling off. I have a WESD51 that's been going strong for fifteen years. I see they've gone up quite a bit. My memory may be off, but I think I snagged it on sale for around $80.

A few guys I know swear by the hakko. My weller 51 is still melting solder so no need to go shopping.

Years ago (I was in my twenties) I was sent to Boston for computer training by my company. You can only imagine the confusion of this naive southern boy asking for directions to Worcester. For those not familiar, its pronounced 'worster'. What was cool is the gas station attendant asked me if I lived anywhere close to Athens, GA. I said not too far. He was a huge REM fan, and freaked when I told him they played small clubs in my town. We might have talked for an hour about the Athens music scene. He gave me a map with hand drawn directions.

Music brings us together.

I live outside of Boston.
Worcester is actually pronounced either 'Wuhster" or, as the natives say it "Wister".
Not that we talk funny around here, but we do talk fast.

It's actually Wuhsta. There are no "er" sounds.

I bought a Hakko about six months ago when I noticed that they were in one of the weekly Fry's Electronics adds at a pretty substantial discount ($20 or 30 off). Nice upgrade over the rinky-dink Weller I was using before.

A few have mentioned tips not lasting... a few years ago I read a tip to use only distilled water on the sponge, that this would help tip longevity. ...something about the minerals in most tap water. I made the switch and I definitely think it makes a difference.

I've been using a Hakko 936 for about 10 years and have never even had to replace a heating element, though it has burned through several tips. I have been well satisfied with it. The newer model is butt ugly, but if it's anywhere as durable as the 936, it's a champ!
