Damn. Sorry, Phil. I've got 3, and I really do know what you are going through. Take comfort knowing you gave her a great life.

Re: My dog had a stroke
I'm sorry to hear this.
My dog had a stroke at 11 or 12 years of age. Onset of symptoms was gradual, within a few hours she went from slightly losing balance while standing to lying down/not being able to stand up without falling over, rapidly tilting and correcting the head, also the eye pupils were very quickly drifting down and to the side and then correcting to straight (like twice a second). I took her to the vet who reassured me that dogs recover better than humans after a damage like that (probably a burst blood vessel in the affected half of the brain; also a year earlier had an edema in the ear after a burst blood vessel). The vet gave us anti-sickness injections to administer if need be and to wait it out (she said couple of weeks). Sure thing the dog couldn't eat the next day, vomited, head still tilting with all the world spinning round... I had to support her with bandages underneath the body to hold her balance and take her outside to pee. Was sad to see. After a few days she started improving, begin to stand on her own, still occasionally fell over, but gradually recovered. It took a few months still for the head tilt to fade away. She lived to 15 years, died from cancer.
It's important to stay with them throughout, that's what matters most to them, their companions' presence in good or bad.

Very sorry, Phil. After mine went I never got another.
Re: My dog had a stroke
The deed is done. Frankie is in a better place now. I can tell you, she had one bad last day, but the whole family gathered to bid her farewell. She went peacefully.
I recognize now, there were mild symptoms for months that I did not recognize through lack of experience. Simply due to age, this was more or less expected, but still a shock.
Your messages of support are very comforting and I appreciate that each and every one of you took a moment to offer kind words. I expect I have a few hard days ahead.
Everyone, be well. Thank you so much.

Re: My dog had a stroke
Hang in Phil old buddy. I came to this exact place when I put my two friends down within 6 months of each other a few years ago. We're all dog people here I think.

Re: My dog had a stroke
Our last dog we put down was real hard.
She was our Dalmatian and we loved her so much.
The only thing that kept us from really losing it was, we had three other dogs still at home to love on.
It may seem difficult to think about it now, but a new puppy in a month or two is very good therapy for grief.

Re: My dog had a stroke
I'm kind of late to this thread--mainly because I have been avoiding it. I'm a dog person too--have been my whole life. I don't know of any other creature--two legged or four--that has such a capacity for love and forgiveness as a dog. You've probably heard the saying "the world is going to the dogs" which is used in a not so kind way. Well, my opinion is, if the world did go to the dogs, it would be a much better place.

Coda (the RedDog) sends his sympathies and best wishes of support.
Re: My dog had a stroke
Again, all the replies are appreciated and none are too late. I have come to realize, because my office has been in my home for the past 10 years, that I often spent days on end with Frankie -- more time than with my wife or kids (who are now grown and moved out.) I think this is making it extra hard on me, the sudden separation from my very best friend. Jana, you are so right in what you say. This little dog gave me so much love and joy with just a wag or a lick. I can see, it will be a while to make the adjustment, and things will never be the same.
Re: My dog had a stroke
Dogs need to be happy and when that becomes impossible this is the last kind and loving thing you can do. Hang in there.
Re: My dog had a stroke
Firestorm, you are so right about this. The kids (now young adults) and my wife and I all agreed it was the right thing to do and we arrived at it right away. It didn't make doing it easier, but we knew she was gone on Sunday night after the stroke.
All, I want to apologize to those who have posted about the loss of a loved one (including dogs and other pets) and for which I may not have responded. Even though we are virtual here (for the most part), TAG is a wonderful community. The job of the community is to provide support. If I have failed in that duty, I ask for your forgiveness. These responses to my call have been a real (and not virtual) source of comfort. We should all remember to do the same for others. A simple, "I'm very sorry to hear." requires little effort and goes a great distance.
