Son of a bitch...really?? I loved Ray. His bubbling style on the Mellotron, specifically, Riders On The Storm is in my top 50 all time favorites. He was really able to create a visual and textural sonic landscape.

RIP Ray...one of the greats for sure.

One of the true greats. He did the work of two band members and then some. I think he was fond of saying Pinky played the bass in the Doors. In truth, it was the whole left hand.

I saw the Doors once. Madison Square Garden, fall of 1969, IIRC. They opened with Touch Me, then dismissed the horns. Jim was intoxicated, very intoxicated -- very nearly falling down drunk. The band did it's best to follow him. They did a stellar job of following him. Ray was a musician's musician. RIP.

I remember being impressed by The Crystal Ship having such a tasteful classical sounding piano solo on a rock 45. (flipside to Light My Fire)

Ray is really the reason for the Doors. He groomed Morrison to be on stage and take it where it went. He recognized the germ in Morrison lyrics and turned them into something memorable with his music.

I got to meet Ray with John and Robbie ( Jim was in the dressing room in a deep conversation with a Mr. Jack Daniels and couldn't be bothered with meeting fans) in 1969. They just seemed like cools guys who dug doing the music. No rock star trip from them.

He will live on in the music he made....

I didn't realize he was 74! Damn, some of us are all getting old. I read Ray's autobiography quite a few years ago. It was well done and very interesting. Talked about his days growing up in Chicago, how he didn't fit in with most kids, and how his parents really enforced his piano practice schedule even though he tended to play other things beyond what his teacher recommended. He talked about how he really gained his left hand independence in his parents home as a child/teen. The book is a great read with a lot of information and details about the Doors as well.

RIP Ray...thanks for the music.

Robbie was so unique.
