Yeah, I'm just sanding lightly to get the last of the sealer off. I tried a range of nasty chemical strippers (in the garage, doors open, with cartridge breather mask and gloves). Nothing seems to put a dent in this stuff other than heat or abrasion. Heat just makes it expand, lift, and sometimes crack. I am using a scraper as much as possible and have the neck pocket well taped off since that fit was darn close to perfect from the factory. I'm also scraping carefully around the binding which looks surprisingly good. The back has a sheet of mahogany veneer, but you can tell from the sides that the body is made from multiple glued-up pieces.
I'm a little afraid to find out what this crazy thick Chinese sealer is made from. It's some sort of cross-linked catalized polymer, I'm guessing.
Has anyone seen one of these?

When I repaint or otherwise refurb these things I leave the thick undercoat on.
It's probably holding the pieces of endangered jungle balsa together.

GuitarBob, In hindsight, I think you're right. I probably overcommitted in my quest to make it look fancy. Shoulda just done a gold top.

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
