Like it or not, Windows is built upon a premise that they supply the software, and the boxes you add to it will work because they are built to their specifications. But there are thousands of choices of hardware, few or none of which are identical. Some work extremely well, others not so much. And each added generic is more than likely to have problems interfacing with the existing system.

Apple, on the other hand makes the hardware and the software.

Look at all the version of Windows, and you'll see that they typically issue nultiple code revisions over the first year of release, at little at a time as they find more problems.

Apple usually has all the glitches out in the first 30 days.

But Windows will continue to rule because CEOs are all the same today. Buy the cheapest we can find!

The guy who designed protools offers reaper a free demo / license for download. Includes a good amount of plug ins works like a stripped down version of PTs.

I still run PTs, being that it is the standard im forced to comform and accomadate.

The itunes / app store downloads are not the only option for software you can hookup an external cd/dvd read write drive via USB. Allowing third party software that can not be downloaded via the apple stores or manufactures websites. Its not the end of the world. Apple is trying to stream line and expodite sales and shipping. By using your apple. ID it logs and saves all your purchases so future products or system recovery is as easy as logging in and downloading.

Apple has always been a company that advances its products and makes its last models obsolete. Welcome abourd each model lasts about 3 years before its no longer the best of the best. From an audio video graphic stand point u less you are doing commercial production you have no need to be cutting dge and if you are needing the top of the line you are probably renting the equipment so adding a Drive to your contract is pennies on the contract.

Poor bastid. The reason I'm out of computer sales is I got tired of fixing the crap other sales people sold as "compatible". When I went independent in 1993, a lot of computer stores in LA hired me to fix other consultants "builds".

It got so bad at one point that there was some guy named "Reggie" in LA I followed to six different studios (Sony to Seymour Butts, the porn producer) and I knew exactly what was wrong with each system before I started. After the 2nd or 3rd one you notice a trend.

But he made my a lot of money, and he got sued in small claims by a few companies, too. At one point I was hired to fix another porn companies editing system and the original store/consultant/whatever, charged them for low level formatting their hard drive.

As you probably know, that takes about 30 seconds to start and several hours to finish while it does it's thing.

They thought it was cool to charge them $750 to watch the drive, even though a newer/bigger drive that was already LL formatted cost $500.

Unscrupulous behavior was always rampant in computer sales/consulting in So Cal. I'm not surprised that your Mom got swindled, but I am sorry to hear about it.

Apple's not to blame here they're just at the vanguard (as always) but The Cloud is the BIG solution to media control and to pirating that many industries have been crying for since Napster brought the masses to file sharing. Windows and Google are just a few small steps behind so there's no way out. All music, software, movies, porn, photos, magazines, newspapers will only be available from someone's web store. It'll be no more dl'ing except for installable stuff that w/o the installer part you won't be able to pass on, and this only until local PCs just become short clients on The Cloud. For media you'll buy it and it'll go to your cubby hole in the cloud and you'll access it only from there - streaming not dl'ing. Software and media will be rented not owned. This is happening quickly.

There was an article in the NYT about digital rights when you die. Can you pass on your Kindle books, the music library or DVD collection you bought and paid for if it's hosted somewhere? Or just give it away (or resell) the way you did with your old books, vinyl or cds? Right now the digital lords say NO, and with their money and power guess whose going to have the final word. I use a Kindle and already if I like a book I finished I can't just give it to a pal. There will be no more ripping stuff you like to share with a friend, you'll have to "friend" a limited number prolly free to share your cloud hosted media with and others will be an added fee - auto-withdrawn every month from you bank account or cc card. There's going to be a lot af scrambling for they last few cents in people's accounts at the end of every month once all this digital world is fully implemented.

Facebook/Instagram just had a serious shit storm when they tried to claim ownership and publishing rights to all photos people had uploaded to their servers. They recanted but how unreal medieval serf-lord shit is that? You will purposefully go live in the boonies just to get away from this crap. At least us geezers. Better world, worse world? Beats me, but so far the users have had very little say in any of it so I'm leaning worse.

I've used both Win and Mac for 25 years. Come on Realtarded remember how much Windows deeply sucked till XP (which was nothing great either)!!! If MS had been making cars, at any one time 1/3 of the autos in the world would have been on the side of the road with the hood up, steaming - that's from '85 to 2000! Whenever in the history of industry was any product this awful for so long? The few troubles a now big pop phenomenon Apple gives still doesn't erase these bad memories for me, but these last few years I've become meh about OSs. My world doesn't revolve around a cellphone and social media and Apple and their walled garden and limitations and kiddie offerings is starting to irk me, as does the cost of keeping up with their expensive underpowered 3 year support lifespan hardware. I'll give Win 8 a bit to see where it goes. Phones are now more important than computers, if the MS phone stuff fails this time I think it'll take the OS down with it.
