Saw Robben Ford and Michael Landau last night

Post by azatplayer »

..wow! Really. I dont oft gush about players, and ive never been a fan of RF and knew little of Mike L. But wow. Jaw dropping stuff.
The stuff you know of Ford just wasnt there. Ive had respect for him but was never my cup of tea. But theres clearly influence from Landau, the merging of two great players and what rubs ff from each on the other, wonderful symbian chemistry. Landau's like Hendrix's and Becks love child, amazing playing, ive never heard the experimentation he was pulling off, really odd at times but finished perfectly. He bought out a swampyness in Fords style that we didnt know he possessed. Frankly RF blew me away with the stuff we didnt know he was even capable of. Brilliant when you get that surprise.
Ford had a silverface super reverb and what looked like a newer twin. Played a deluxe goldtop by the look, with mini buckers, and his tele. The goldtop had wonderful clean tones, very subtle rhythm tones, but that tele, damn. You could tell he was real at home with it.
Landau had a pair of devilles, i think 2x12's, and never put his strat down.
Chameleon with his rig, there were all kinds of tones in that setup, awesome.

I think what was the standout tho was the underlying respect each player had for the rest of the band. No egos, no 12 guitars. No breaks. Each gave the other space. Felt to me like a jamming band where there was beautiful ego free friendships just hangin to hear each other.
The last guy i saw there was not like that. Monster player, but not as at ease with himself.
Theyre on in an hour, im debating going again..

The really great players use great sidemen and treat them as such. I'm thinking both Ford and Landau have been around long enough to put the music WAY ahead of their egos.

Cool report.
You were lucky to see Renegade Creation.
Ford and Landau are a great pair.

I have tickets to the Portland show on the 20th but it is just the RF trio.

No doubt it will be good and I hope he uses his Dumble.
If he does it will be the first time I have heard one live.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

I seen the RF trio last night in Seattle. I've never listened to him before and was pretty blown away by the whole band! Phil

I saw them 2 weeks ago in Perth.

Awesome and I got to meet them after the gig at a CD signing, good guys very friendly with everyone who was there.

A friend of mine was the guitarist in the support band and he said that the LP was a '54 Goldtop with after market minibucker PU's
