The Tolex Tutorial
MODS
If I am not supposed to post this please just delete it.
I lost my hosting in 2008 for my Tolex Tutorial. But I have revised it and got excellent hosting in the way of an article. I got a lot of requests to eveive it so here it is.
I don't know if very many guys here have seen the original 1998 version but this is better laid out.
I don't get paid by them BTW.

Thanks Casey, I used it years ago as well, and it really helped out!
Re: The Tolex Tutorial
Hide Glue and Finger joints ! otherwise good.
Re: The Tolex Tutorial
I use box joints to build most cabinets for myself. But if a cabinet is going to be covered a simple butt joint properly done will work fine for those without the tools or skill sets to achieve those or dovetails.billyz wrote:Hide Glue and Finger joints ! otherwise good.
Hide glue is making a comeback. When I was a kid (1950's) my dad used hide glue for some things and it smelled like roasted road kill. But I understand some of the new stuff isn't near as bad. I might try the hide glue myself next time just for grins.
Re: The Tolex Tutorial
Hide glue is really easier to work than contact cement. You can use an old electric skillet to heat it, or I have a hot glue pot. Moser pearls are the best unless you have access to the big chunks of gelatinous stuff(commercial grade). I have not noticed any foul smell, except old stuff that smells like dirty socks,a little. There really are no fumes.Casey4s wrote:I use box joints to build most cabinets for myself. How do you know what you are getting ? I have noticed some are much better for tolexing , like "Moser". The fancy stuff from Stewmac is lighter in color and does not work as well. I would not know which is sweeter as I don't lick my brush.Reeltarded wrote:You are going to think I am kidding..

Re: The Tolex Tutorial
SMac sells bovine glue. I've bought rabbit labled as such, and possum comes from a friend with some crazy connections. Possum also contains some squirrel, and pets. It's processed roadkill.billyz wrote:How do you know what you are getting ? I have noticed some are much better for tolexing , like "Moser". You are right. The darker crystal is the stronger glue. The darker glue is burned though.
