Hey Guys,Im trying to finish up all my started projects and go back to playing for a bit,I bought a silverface deluxe reverb on ebay a couple years ago.The normal channel isnt that loud and when you hit a chord hard it crackles and pops.I suspect its the preamp tubes,Ive done some swaping but I need the corect tubes x7's t'7s ect.The caps were redone they are the illinois,Do you think I should redue them with the spragues? And what brand of tubes for the preamps would you recomend.I guess answers for those 2 guestions would get me going on something,Also the caps throughout the board are all original Do you think I should starts replacing them too?
This amp was really nice when I got it and I would just like to get it reliable again,Thanx Mikey

Re: Deluxe reverb
Gerald Weber writes bad things about the Illinois caps, but then again, he is in the cap business now. I have avoided Illinois in my amps because you do see them a lot in mass production amps. I would change out the rest of the electrolytic amps in the amp, the cathode bypass caps and the bias supply cap. I would leave the rest alone, particularly if you have the blue Mallory tone caps. Start with a good cleaning of the pots, jacks and tube sockets and retension the tube sockets. Make sure your input jacks are really shorting like they are supposed to and clean the contacts with a burnishing tool. Change out the 470 Ohm resistors on the to power tube sockets with 3Watt metal film resistors.
That should be a good start.

Thanx
Thanx Man,That sounds good,I didnt even think about the jacks,Ill get to it a post my progress,Mikey

Just to add my 2 cents.
I use nothing be metal oxide or thick film resistors anywhere that needs larger wattage resistors, like in the power supply and on on the power tubes.
They are flame proof and handle the heat much better.

Re: Deluxe reverb
Eh, I don't have a problem with IC caps. I've been using them for years in circuits without issues and I haven't had a problem yet with their HV caps..
I use a lot of CC resistors in power circuits because they are what I have laying around. They make great grid stoppers and work well in power supplies as well because of the low inductive nature. The only problem with CC's is finding ones that are within spec, especially if you are using 10% parts. I tend to not care so much about the value as long as they are close enough to spec. Amp manufacturers don't spend a bunch of time matching their resistors and I think it helps contribute some "mojo" by not being uber-obsessive about such things.

Gerald Weber isn't really qualified when it comes to discuss caps - or nearly anything amp-related.Gerald Weber writes bad things about the Illinois caps

Re: Deluxe reverb
same here. I have used IC caps and have never had an issue. GW is into caps now?

Ooops, I was going to say Gerald Weber isn't in much of a discussion mode currently. But that's Ted. Long live Ted Weber.FYL wrote:Gerald Weber isn't really qualified when it comes to discuss caps - or nearly anything amp-related.Gerald Weber writes bad things about the Illinois caps

Re: Deluxe reverb
Forget about channel one. You'll never use it anyway. Put a NOS Tung-Sol in V2, a NOS RCA gray plate in V3, General Electrics in V4, V5 and V6. Convert back to Black face spec. Use HyTron or Tung-Sols for 6V6s.
Forget about the RCA's in a Silver or Blackface for the 6V6's. They are more of a Tweed tube.
I don't know what to do on the caps. I have a BF build in the works and I'm gonna use either FP cans from AES or Nichicons in the normal configuration. For coupling and bias I'm tempted to try Mallorys or their uber expensive boutique equivalents. Otherwise I think the SBE orange drops. The only place I like to see CCs in in the slope position. Otherwise CF or MF for me. The more carbon you get in there the more noise you get but some think you also get more original tone. It's a long and pleasant task to voice an amp. Try everything.
Personal opinion but I think the tubes and the speaker make more difference than the bias or PS caps. Coupling and tone stack caps are pretty important though.
