Shields on tube socket?

Shields on tube socket?

Does anyone use the center metal thingys (I assume they are for some type of shielding) on the 9 pin sockets?

They can be used as an extra lug. I have a Rivera amp with a somewhat complicated version of those. Some are attached to ground. I couldn't figure out what he was doing with them.

They make nice supports for a ground bus
