I happen to have a few old "brown" (they appear more dull-reddish to me) coupling capacitors from a 1968 Princeton. I was mulling over trying them out in an amp I'm currently re-working. I know that among the golden-eared these caps have a bad reputation, but I was wondering:
Have any of you posters any real-world experience with the sonic performance of these caps? I know these caps are looked down upon, but the amps of that era still made some pretty good tones- despite these caps- and that fact had me wondering. I'm going to try them, but I thought I'd post and ask you fellows as well...
I sincerely appreciate your comments!
Bill.

I rebuilt a Silverface Super recently. I saw the brown caps and thought the amp would sound like ass. It sounded incredible and I was very suprised because of the bad reputation.
I've got blisters on my fingers!

I've heard them called turd caps, blue turds , brown turds,...........
It's a color association that's gotten around, even by players who have no idea
about repair.
I think also that its a comparison to what fender used to used.
I've heard some marvelous all original fenders, great caps there.
fender at some point get cheap, and tone deaf, and still is.

I sincerely thank you both for your replies. I'm going to try them out and see how it goes, and will post back.
I welcome any other comments as this is the only time I have had any experience with this particular cap brand. I have amps with the blue ITW caps (the 70's blue models) and the blue tubular pre-CBS caps, but this Princeton is my only amp with this type cap.
Thank you again, Bill.
