Cute. The cathode is heated by the flame, so the flame is doing the job of the heater, and since a visible flame is ionized gas, that must be allowing electron flow and substituting for the vacuum. I guess the electrons have enough energy to jump to the plate. The Morse sounds like VDEK7NSVV... amateur radio call sign?

Close - V is the letter almost universally accepted as the "test letter" - usually sent in groups of three.

DE is from in French - universally used, I guess, because it's shorter than the English word.

His call sign is K7NS. I don't remember much about American call signs, but I think 7 is the southwest.

And now you know how I got my introduction to vacuum tubes.

Thanks for the explanation, Wayne. I don't know much about it, but I think with only 4 characters in his call sign, this cat has been around a while.

I think you're right. There are 5 levels of licensure in the US and each level has access to a different length call sign, with the more advanced licences getting more priveliges and shorter calls. Very confusing. I have full priveliges here in Canada up to I think 250W, but haven't sent a single dot or dash in about 10 years.
