Marshall 1960a cabinet

Post by Buschman »

Just picked it up unloaded and wondering what to put in it. On a budget guys. Are the import Greenbacks any good? Anybody tried the Jensen Mods-they are quite cheap.

Personally, I'd go for Hellatones - improved versions of the import Celestions at a lower price point. If you want to go cheaper, the Sammi's have a greenbackish sound to them, and they're quality speakers.

You couldnt give me a Jensen MOD for free. Call Dave at Avatar and see what he's got a sale price on currently. A Marshall cab should have some kind of Celestion loaded in it I believe...

Even the Warehouse Guitar Speakers would be good - dont know what they cost currently...

I will normally use a Liverpool or Express. An occasional 18 watt lite. Which model Sammi? I haven't checked out warehouse speakers but I will. I like the Hellatone idea. I have a pair of 4 ohm old vintage 30s I could use with something else I guess.

You'll want something Greenback-like then.

Scumbacks would be the ideal, but since you're looking for cheap then I'd probably try the Warehouse Guitar Speakers' Green Beret which is a G12M-75 clone.

I have a perfectly matched set of vintage Black Backs I could sell you, but that wouldn't exactly be a budget deal :)

Since you mentioned you are on a budget, I would suggest that you look at the Warehouse Speakers. They aren't as cheap as they used to be, but they are still about half the price of real Celestions for many of their models. They have speakers that are patterned after Greenbacks, Vintage 30's, G12H-30's, G12H-65's, etc.

I like mixing speakers in a 4x12. A pair of G12H-30's and a pair of Greenbacks or a pair of G12H-65's, and put them in an X pattern. Cool mixture of tones.

Try not to get too bogged down on this. Get the speakers that sound good to you, fit your playing style and are within your budget. Sound clips and opinions only help me take a direction. Though I think it's best to audition speakers in person.
