I've been monkeying around with my Palomino V32 trying to bring it down to a lower level so I can have fun with it at living room jams.
I did several things to it so I could pull two tubes and run it at half power. One is to replace the 100 ohm screen resistors with 1K units per some info in the O Conner TUT3 book. It seems like it's too dull now. Is that to be expected when using higher value screen resistors? I made 3 changes at once, but this one seems most suspect. Any words of wisdom?

Have a look back about a month or so for thread titled "screen resistors please weigh in". https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=6201
Re: screen resistors & tone?
Hey, thank you for that reference, very useful. It seems that my experience of less highs is consistent with the other guys. I probably can undo the other mods I made to defeat the heavy high-end emphasis in this amp and use the 1K screen resistors to achieve the warm effect I am after. I favor a dark, woody tone and this might help me get there.Ears wrote:Have a look back about a month or so for thread titled "screen resistors please weigh in". https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=6201
Re: screen resistors & tone?
1k is a fairly modest value, the change in tone is not usually very great when putting them in if the previous value was lower. Going up to over 2k tends to produce noticible compression though.Fretts wrote:I've been monkeying around with my Palomino V32 trying to bring it down to a lower level so I can have fun with it at living room jams.

In your case, the effect of the screen resistors is dwarfed by the doubling of the OT impedance (I assume you did this when you removed two tubes?).

Welcome to the Wizard himself. How's the book progressing?
