1st Amp Build Suggestions Also 1st post here Hi

Post by realtree71 »

Hi All 1st post here.

I'd like to dive in and build one. I have some background in soldering, etc. A long time ago I could read schematics and understand layouts but that was years ago.

Can you suggest something in the 10 - 20 watt range? Maybe something with a 6l6, but high gain, I don't really care about the "Rich Sparkling Cleans" I want a dirty little crunch monster ala 6l6/6v6 etc style. I love the Marshall Studio 15.

I dont mind only have a tone control if it would make it simpler.

So I guess Im after a volume, Gain, tone or B M T.

My current riggs are mostlyl Marshall - JCM 800, Silver Jubalee, Studio 15. Orange Rocker30 and Tiny Terror, Fender Bassman, and a Buotique 14 watt.

I have a ton of Cabs so this will only be a head version

thanks for your suggestions

So are you looking for a single ended amp, that is with one power tube?

What kind of wattage do you want?

Since you already have mostly Marshall type amps are you looking for a Fender type?

For low power how about Princeton?

My Marshall Studio is my most appealing amp, it seems pretty simple, it has 2 6l6 tubes, a Gain controll and an "Power brake" for the external/head phone jack... I'm not interested in including a power brake but I like that its 15watts has Hi Gain and uses the 2ea 6l6 tubes as apposed the el84.

A 5E3 type would be nice if it had the added gain. Is the princeton the 5f2 layout? A Champ with tone control?

Yeah I guess you have to decide what kind of tone you want.

Tweed or the blackface if going the Fender direction.

I built a Brown Note D'Lite 44 (2x6L6) that I really enjoy.

I has a very gainy OD channel and the clean channel can get quite a bit of hair on it as it is cranked up.

It has a very good master volume on it so I can play at lower volumes but still sound good.

Foot switcheable OD and PAB.

might I suggest the atomic 16 schematic, or one of the ax84 high octones. The atomic 16 sounds better I have heard, but I wouldn't know from personal experience.

I do like the description of this. Do you have any clips or pics posted. Ill search google also.. I couldnt read your layout plan entirely... looked like 2 6l6 tubes and 2 or 3 other 12 ax7's?

Yes it is 2 6L6 or 6V6 and three 12ax7's.

V1 is the clean channel and V2 is the OD channel, V3 is the phase inverter.

It's basically a Dumble Lite.

Here are some sound clips.

You might want to consider the Allen Class Act - it's discussed in a thread you might otherwise overlook, as it's in Garage Talk, and titled "Is img turned off?" https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0

I have a thread here documenting the whole build of my D'Lite 22/33 ... my first and only build. I recommend the process ... the kit ... and the amp.

Good luck with your build if you choose one. :D
