cad files ? octal socket layout ??

Post by Carlin Mitchell »

Does anyone have a DXF or EPS file of a common hole pattern for 8 pin sockets ? Or all sockets for that matter ? I browsed the net a bit on my lunch break but figured I'd have better luck here. Thanks ! Carlin Mitchell

what is it exactly that you're looking for? I have cad files in several formats (dwg, dxf, sldprt, ipt.,...)

Thanks for the reply chief.... I run a cnc router table at work and I can import any vector art just about... eps or dxf works easiset. I'm a veteran guitar player and first time amp builder. This garage forum is awesome !! I've so much help and feedback from all of you. I'm been a designer and fabricator for several years and am just now at a stage in my life that I afford to take a little time and build an amp for myself. Everyone has suggested the CHAMP as a starter amp so I'm looking at routing a chassis for a champ. I've ordered a sew sockets off of ebay but they wont arrive for another week and I wanted to get a jump on the chassis CAD file. If you have vector art I'd love to see it. I know the socket art is a circle with two screw holes but I can't seem to find a standard size for them. If you have a layout from an exisiting chassis maybe I coul;d pick and choose and steal what I need. Thanks for your help !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carlin.

The hole size for Octal sockets varies. The socket usually used in Fenders is a 1 inch hole whereas the hole for the Marshall type sockets is 1 1/8 (if memory serves me right). I have seen other sockets advertised that take hole sizes different from what I just mentioned. Before you drill that hole it might be best to have the socket your going to use in hand. And speaking of sockets, I avoid the ones that have the fork style contacts, nothing but problems with those. Try to get sockets that have a sleeve type thing for gripping the tube pins, they make a much more reliable connection.

This might sound dumb but..... besides the mounting... is there any real difference between the marshall style and fender style sockets ?

not really. I think Fender got a lifetime supply of sockets that went in a 1 inch hole and Marshall did the same with a socket that happened to go in a 1 1/8 inch hole. There are good and bad quality sockets in both kinds. I happen to have a hole punch that makes a 1 1/8 inch hole, so naturally I use all 1 1/8 inch sockets (I don't have a 1 inch hole punch).

The wrecks use a 1 3/16" hole for their sockets, presumably for a Marshall style Octal???

I went through the expense of trying to get every size of chassis punch until I found that a big unibit cuts a superb hole with a third the effort.

The 9 pin sockets typically take a 3/4" hole and then I use a very big Unibit in metric sizes to accommodate the various sizes of octals...
