Re: TAD vs Spragues Filter Cap Question
I've used 20uF/450v and 20uF/500v caps in my Fenders with no ill effects. This was in both a '65 BF and a '68 SF(Transition AB763) Bandmaster. These both have been heavily gigged with no problems. Hell, past the screens you shouldn't have anything higher than the high 300's on the PI.
As for using TAD's, I haven't. I've used both Sprague and F&T, and most recently F&T exclusively.
Thanks,
Andy

Re: TAD vs Spragues Filter Cap Question
Thanks for answering back Andy,
I seen the TAD 20x550 and thought it was the closest i could find...some say they are F&T but F&T dont seem to make a 20X550 unless TAD is putting that label on a 20X500 or 22X500..I am new to this so i do thank you for the help!

They manufacture a full line of 550/600V caps on an OEM basis.some say they are F&T but F&T dont seem to make a 20X550

Re: TAD vs Spragues Filter Cap Question
I just put a set of the TAD 20uf 550v caps in a 61 Concert amp. I like them, the amp sounds great.
I went through the same problem you have, with the Sprague's being to long. The 61 Concert had seven 20uf 525v caps in series. I really didn't want to change the power section to parallel 40uf caps.
I couldn't tell ya if TAD had F&T make the caps or just re-label the 20uf 500v cap. Considering TAD is in Germany, maybe they needed a higher rated cap to run on European voltages.

Re: TAD vs Spragues Filter Cap Question
Ive used a lot of brands....tad, sprauge, nichicon...etc
To tell the truth I really cant hear a difference. Layout and other parts quality seems to have a much greater impact on tone quality. Assuming of course that the cap is in good shape (I did have 1 leaky tad out of the box).
My vote is nichicon. Beats em all on price, size, and the quality seems to be superb.
