A few questions about asteroid mods

Post by chromaticdeth87 »

I've been lurking around here for about two years and have finally have some cash to throw at a new project. What I have now is a framus cobra clone with lead channel only. It's a great amp just wanting a new toy that is less soldano/jcm800 sound. What is very cool is the bax/james tonestack, it's really versatile and gets pretty crunchy. I've heard it's similar to the early orange models in the 70's. What I noticed from the asteroid scheme is that the tone stack comes almost right after the input and first gain stage? While the tonestack of the cobra is placed at the very end of all the gain stages. One mod I had in mind was to substitute the KF modified marshall stack and drop in the bax where the original would belong as well as what it might sound like at the end of all the gain stages before the PI. Also I really enjoy the sounds of 6550's and really want to try some kt-77's has anyone tried either of these in their asteroid clone? Also has anyone tried some non standard (heyboer) trannies in their clones. I like the look of the merc mags jcm600 output xfers or a hiwatt 50w clone. I know this is all messing with the mojo factor, but simply an asteroid with bax tonestack and 6550's. What do you guys think? Thanks for all the knowledge you guys offer here.
