Bias caps on 6G4

Post by angelodp »

This 6G4 amp seems to have the incorrect bias caps - 50uf @150v
instead of the 8uf @150v the schematic calls for. They seem to be newer caps, should I change these out to the values called for in the schematic??

larger caps

Why are the larger caps a good idea here. What exactly do they do in this spot.

They're just filter caps for the bias circuit. Since there isn't much in the way of current there, the caps don't need to be very big. 8-10µ is pretty standard, but I've used 160µ on at least one build because that's what I had on hand.

you get less ripple in the DC.... not a bad idea for a half wave rectifier
the RMS ripple current can be 2 to 3 time the DC load current
