Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
Anybody here ever build any of the tube amp kits from S-5-Electronics?
Looks like fun and they aren't to much $$.

Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
Scratch built or a kit?
Tubes? Single end?? Push Pull???
I built a passive pre-amp and a Bottlehead Foreplay...both easy, sold the Foreplay, passive has zero noise, extremely transparent, piece of cake.
Low budget passive pre-amp=Alpha step attenuator stereo
High budget passive pre-amp=Danish Audio ConnecT (DACT)
Low budget tube pre-amp=Bottlehead.com
High budget tube pre-amp=Reach for ze wallet...
I have an old Dynaco ST70 (4xEL34) with a new board and power supply (triodeselectronic.com), all Riken ohm resistors and Jensen Copper oil caps that i will never sell. I listen to music 4-5 hours a day and i don't get any listening fatigue.
Dynaco ST-35 (4xEL84) are also worthy...i've build lots of those (diytube.com) (diyaudio.com)(triodeselectronics.com)
For a source...i have left audiophile forums/,magazines 6 years ago...a little out of touch really...i use a Rega Planet that i've highly modified with a new clock (LCAUDIO XO3) i keep getting CD's but IPOD is also great.
Built two 12" subs with partsexpress.com Dayton Audio Reference and Bash 500 watts plate amp. GREAAAT SUBS!!!
Lots of good speaker kits at Madisound...Solen...PartsExpress
Lots of hype in audioland. Weed out the duds and you'll be a happy camper. No need to spend big box either for a great sound.

Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
But for a decent home theater system you will need at least six channels.
So if you go the mono block route you're talking some serious outlay of cash.
Then the preamps, then the speakers.

I advise my clients to keep it simple stupid...
Start with a GOOD stereo system...

I'll tell you...when you pop that Blue-Ray in...you'll have a smile on your face.
But that is me, i'm a simple duder...i don't want 28 pedals between my strat/tele and my amps.
Otherwise... you become...huh...er...huh...confused...

I've seen too many guys, buying...selling...bying...selling...never satisfied with their sound...chasing their tail...
Lots of reading and testing will get you there...don't skimp on quality product...learn about acoustic...speaker placement is important...room size, shape...
I have to take my meds...

Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
exactly what i need to figure out. i need 6 preamps (for a 5.1 system), 6 channels of poweramp. but how do I split the tv or dvd signal into 6 separate channels to push each one to it's own pre/powerampStructo wrote:But for a decent home theater system you will need at least six channels.

Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
Some DVD players have 5.1 direct outs (6 RCA's). You may need to upgrade your player; my DVD 2nd Gen Sony unit has them though. Theres other Digital Preamps that break up the signal too.wsaraceni wrote:exactly what i need to figure out. i need 6 preamps (for a 5.1 system), 6 channels of poweramp. but how do I split the tv or dvd signal into 6 separate channels to push each one to it's own pre/powerampStructo wrote:But for a decent home theater system you will need at least six channels.

You could totally go. DVD Player Digi Coax --> Digital 5.1 Preamp --> Tube Preamp --> Tube Power Amp.
That's what I've been looking at doing or minus the digital Preamp. I bet it would sound hot.

Re: schematics for tube home theater system?
I run two amps connected to my dvd player
both I have built
the first is a fairly small stereo
its SE with a couple 6V6's wired triode
driven by 6SN7s wired as MU- followers
it has a common power supply... so I can cross wire speakers
to get differential stereo information as front and rear surrond effect
it works... very simple and very detailed, sweet, great for low volume
near field listening.... dont need a decoder... just the stereo out on the dvd
the second amp is a 25 ish watts mono run from the signal sum of both channels
to drive a low freq. driver and center channel spk.
get nice efficient speakers so you can enjoy the low watt SE tone...
I built it from bits out of my bone yard
it doesn't need to be a major investment

I also use an st70 for home stereo with a PAS preamp. The problem is nothing has stereo outputs anymore. Is there an adapter box of any kind? Stupid TV does not even have stereo out. It's all some mysterious digital coded stuff. You could probably prug a pod into it

There are convertor units. They can be quite pricey sometimes. You'll want to get a 24-bit 192khz one though. Whats the use of a nice analog amp if you put it boxy digital signals?Buschman wrote:I also use an st70 for home stereo with a PAS preamp. The problem is nothing has stereo outputs anymore. Well the tube stuff does warm up those harsh signals. Its amazing.

digital is very harsh...
its looking like the bit resolution needed to equal informational
content of an analog signal is still a generation away
its like having to look at newsprint.... the greater the magnifacation
the more blurr you see.... thats what a good tube amp reveals
the audio format for dvd is a differnt system ... or so I've been told
my wife and I like to watch movies and spend more time listening to that format...
the amp was wonderful for that application
on the other hand.... it revealed all the flaws of mp3 instantly
I cant and wont use them since....
