Re: Shielding for inside of head cab
I've used aluminium and copper tape that i'd purchase at Home Depot (heathing dept.).
I now use surplus copper sheets.

I got a roll of aluminum flashing at home depot. Phil

Fender used metal screen material at times. Like on screen doors. Another Home Depot item.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

I've always been curious if magnetic paint would work.
Re: Shielding for inside of head cab
I wrap my head in aluminum foil. I've never had an alien invade my head yet.
Wait... this is about amp heads right?

I use the galvanized metal sold (at Lowes Depot, etc.) for HVAC ductwork. Cheap and easy to work.

I haven't tried it, but I thought of using discarded coffee bean containers like you get at Starbucks (not the cans, the bags with alumuminum in them).
Then you could name each amp in the "Java Series" like starbuck, bold or columbian etc.
It must be part of the amp building disease when you start looking at everything and think "I can use that in an amp".

Metal window mesh should work and you can staple it to the wood, just make sure all sides are in contact.
Not my idea,I read it somewhere I just don't remember where.

This is what I used. Used a paddle bit in my drill press to make clean holes for the chassis mounts (for the bottom piece). and just use a good staple gun to hold in place. Score it with a razor knife then break it to get the size you want.philmanatee wrote:I got a roll of aluminum flashing at home depot. Phil
USE GLOVES! The edges can slice your hand if you aren't careful. I used Mechanix automotive gloves.
Edit: Oh yeah, I sanded the edges to make them less sharp for people sticking their hands in the headbox. Be careful here too!

Re: Shielding for inside of head cab
+1 on a sheet of aluminum for the underside of the chassis. I have not used anything on the rest of the headbox, but I always use tube sockets w/shield cans, and have had no issues with that arrangement.
I guess if you are using any octal preamp tubes (which aren't available with shield cans) you would for sure need to screen the whole box.
BTW I know the argument against using shield cans on preamp tubes but I can't hear anydifference. OTOH my old ears are 25 dB down at 8 kHz according to my audiologist!

Re: Shielding for inside of head cab
If you are using an aluminum chassis this is a pointless exercise since Aluminum is impervious to magnetism, and offers no RF shielding.
You would almost need to have your aluminum coated with alodyne for the shielding to have any effect.

I have used copper sheet you get from hobby stores for "copper art". Easy to cut with scissors. Staple or glue to wood, and make sure the edges contact the chassis.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...
