Eurotube Instructions for tube replacement!

Post by Mars_Amp_Repair »

Hello folks,
Does anyone find these instructions for replacing tubes from Eurotubes troublesome? I sure do.
First of all the instructions do not provide any step about being certain the unit is turned off AND unplugged!
I'm sure all of you have had amps that do not have bleeder resistors to discharge the filter caps and sometimes leave hundreds of volts sitting on the screen & plate pins of the power tubes!
In addition to that, I think suggesting that a non-tech try to re-tension the pins of any tube socket is just plain reckless, esp if they're trying to re-tension the pins on ceramic tube sockets which are prone to chip and break if too much pressure is placed on them.
Spraying the tube pins with contact cleaner is a good suggestion, however they really should have made a point of barring using WD40 or any harsh chemical like that if for no other reason the odor it emits :o . Folks tend to get too liberal with WD40 on everything.
Anyway, I just read this instruction sheet & was immediately 'shocked' at it (;- ).
What ya think?

It’s a disclaimer.
Stating that unless you have done these possible needed check outs and things first then don’t call up complaining that the new tubes you got from us are bad.

Also any amp with a standby switch even with out bleed resistors can drain out the power supply to a safe level in 20 seconds.

And the bleed resistors if there are so that stacked filters share the power supply voltage evenly, not to in the first place make the amp safe from a shock hazard condition when turned off.

I agree about the tensioning, most amps will discharge the filters, but sticking an uninsulated metal object (i.e. dental pick) into the sockets could be exciting. I also spray new tube pins to clean and lubricate the pins. The Euro Tubes FAQ page is much more informative, and specifically mentions this danger: https://www.eurotubes.com/blog/tube-cha ... -handling/ Question is, will anybody read that?

Agreed with SteveM,
If there is a more in-depth warning about the dangers of what Eurotubes is suggesting, THAT should be what is written on the 'Disclaimer' that they provide with the tubes or at that very least a link to the complete warnings that Eurotubes allegedly has on their website.
STILL as SteveM suggests, how many end users will even read the disclaimer/warning supplied with the tubes much less go to the link.
I still suggest omitting the instruction. The potential danger to the end user far outweighs unjustified product returns.
The small sheet supplied with the tubes actually seems to me to be written by an individual with rather limited vision who only focused on what a hassle it is to deal with the returns.

Just as a follow-up,
Today I was working on an SF Deluxe Reverb-Amp. With amp unplugged I had discharged the main caps, but didn't check the B+ on them after that. I went to re-tension the pins on the rectifier tube socket & WHAMMO! Got zapped. It's actually been years since I've gotten shocked at all. I'm not certain why my discharge resistor did not discharge the caps, but I have had that resistor go bad before. It just figures it would happen when I'm posting about it!
Fortunately, I was only shocked between the right hand and the palm of the same hand, so no going thru the heart via the other arm.
So, Case in Point for anyone who wants to trust that the filter caps will bleed off in every amp. They don't. Eurotubes take note. Just be cautious out there guys!
