Elon, weber cap check...?

Post by sonofmickel »

I have had these for a few years now (10?).
Any of these look like the rehoused, Russian doll capacitors?

There are a few Elon, Tung and Weber caps.
Some are crimped on both ends, some normal single crimped.
The double crimped are all Elon and Weber and also have rubber end caps.

The Tungs have aluminum caps on the negative ends.

They all tested very close to uf ratings on my multimeter.
I don't know how to test for voltage ratings.

To test for their voltage rating would call for destructive testing.

Seeing as they have been sitting for so long if you have a veriac and a rectifier bridge or 6 1n4007 diodes I would reform them over a number of hours starting off at 20% of there voltage rating before using them
In an amp, and then use the veriac to continue the reforming .

I just reformed them over the last few days.
Took power off an amps rectifier (JTM build) through parallel 2 x 200k 1watt resistors.
You can see the rectifier in the photo background.
3 out 15 or so "crackled", in the bin with them.
All of the survivors had the voltage drop across the "100k" below 5 volts, should equal success.

Some of the caps are much lighter than they look?(Elon )
They feel hollow and off balance in the hand compared the some FT and sprage caps that I have.
The Tungs feel "right" in the hand?

With metalized film you don't ever have to manage the degradation curve of capacitors. If you can make room for the larger form factor (which can be an issue with old designs).
