Two amps at same volume each with a 12" speaker side by side

Post by pjd3 »

Hello,

Curious a bit here,

If (and when) there are two identical amps (20 watts each into their own 12" speaker side by side in a combo), what be the perceived volume when both sides are equal with same signal? (6 dB increase twice the watts?

Thanks. Somehow I recall perhaps a 6 dB increase.

Best,
PJD3

Assuming both speakers are put out coherent signals (identical amplitude and phase), yes, 6dB.
3dB from doubling the speakers (mutual coupling), 3dB from doubling the power.

Thanks pdf,
By what you say, it sounds like both an electrical and an acoustical component coming into plays and not just one or the other.
