Removing Paint from transformer
I have a chance to get a power & output transformer set that have been spray painted (they have bell housings). I can just remove the bells and sand those down but Any thoughts on how to get the paint off the exposed laminated core? Think steel wool should be fine?

I wouldn't sand the bells, they might be plated. Stripper would be a better choice. Why do you want to remove the paint?

Agree with Martin. However, if it is just a bad paint job (rough, uneven, dull, just doesn't look nice) you might use some very fine grade sandpaper (400-600-800-1000) to sand lightly to polish it to a better finish. When you get to 1000 grit, it will begin to take on a fine furniture-like smoothness. Just be careful not to sand through the paint.
The laminations are probably varnished. Varnish is typically applied and then baked on. This allows some of it to get sucked into the lams. So, same for the lams, nothing aggressive. Alternatively, you might wire brush them and then hit them with something like Sprayon EL600 Clear Insulating Varnish. https://www.sprayon.com/product/el600-c ... g-varnish/

No matter how ugly the core looks even if where painted hot pink, I would not touch it but for to paint over it.
The core plates are varnished to isolate them from each other and any type of sanding or paint stripping might negate that and lessen the efficiency of the core.
When I get a amp in with transformers with rusty cores I treat then with brush on automotive rust converter once I get the dust and crap off of them, this product converts the rust to a primer and once dry I then paint the core a gloss black enamel.

What is the automotive converter you use please? Do you simply brush on?

Re: Removing Paint from transformer
They are poorly spray bombed a color I'd call "electric copper orange". Looks like no prep or anything was done first either. I could just try and get the paint surface smoothish on the bells and paint over all of it in black. hmmm.....

I can’t imagine at all why someone who wasn’t on a bad Acid trip would do such!
