6L6 Tube Recommendations

Post by zozoe »

Hiya,, For my Mac MC30 mono tube amp, w/o taking out a 2nd mortgage, what's the best all around winner?? Amp originally called for 1614 versions.... I'm presently eyeing a set of 7581's for around $100... but I dunno.... KT66's, 7581 & 7581a's, or what have you??
Many thnx 🕉🎵🎵

I would suggest you do what I did for in my 66 Fender SR if you have a extra 1 5/8” of height to spare above your Mac.

Go to SND tubes and get a a matched pair of these NOS Phillips / ECG 6BG6GA tubes for 40 bucks and then get two of the kits he sells to make the adapters since the plate connection comes off the top of these tubes.

These tubes have the same 35 watt plate structure of the 7581 tubes and sound really nice.

If not I like also like the GE 7581As I have in my Bandmaster, or even the JJ 6L6s I have in my TR are great sounding tubes!

I should have some notes at home about tubes that reacted better (so improve linearity) when cathode feedback is applied, like in your amp.
I will take a look and revert.

Interesting!
I always thought a 1614 was a 30 watt rated, but I see its only 25!

I’m not sure that’s it’s valid to directly compare the limiting values of transmitting and receiving valve types. Due to the differing expected operating conditions of those applications.
The 1614 looks to have a 21W limit on a continuous basis, and that’s an absolute max, ie a proportion of in-spec production will not be able to meet that limit (presumably without being damaged / compromised).

It’s surely beneficial to get an understanding of the different rating systems, this RCA publication is great in that regard https://www.one-electron.com/Archives/R ... 0Tubes.pdf
