So for years ive been using 20awg for hook up wire. But I have friends who just use 22 awg what do you guys use.

Here's some guidance!
In terms of the D.C. Voltage section of even a large 200 watt rms tube amp you would not need anything more then 20 ga wire.

I use 22AWG 600V wire for most connections, and sometimes a lower voltage 22AWG for connections that have no HV on them
I build effects and amps and do custom builds to order. Boom.

Yes, of course. I should have been more complete:
- my reply had more to do with a matter of pleasure than with wire section power handling abilities. I don't like much thin wire and solid core 20 AWG is already pretty thin, plus I am sure I stay on the safe side.

22 gauge is fine, but...I prefer 20 gauge solid core because allows for neater layouts because once shaped or bent, it stays in place.
