Switchable Tube/Solid State Rectification

Post by ViperDoc »

Sometimes I like the sag of a tube rectifier, and sometimes I like the quickness of the solid state rectifier. What's the best way to switch between them in the same amp? I've seen tube rectifier circuits that have an on/off switch that switches in a bridge diode setup. I've also seen solid state rectifiers with sag resistors on a switch. What's the best way to do it? Anything wrong with either?

Thanks.
Just plug it in, man.

Check the Mesa Boogie Rectifier series, they do exactly what you are looking for.

Yup easy enough to do with a switch!

Just use a Full size double pole double throw switch and wire it in parallel so it last longer with the voltage that's on it and be sure to place the amp in standby first before switching.

I'm not an expert on this. Some people use a solid state rectifier with a sag resistor to simulate. You might simplify things by doing just that and putting the sag resistor on a switch. Just get a switch that is beefy enough.
