Songwriter 30 dna

Post by wpaulvogel »

I just looked at the gutshot picture. 1st time I’ve seen the inside of a Songwriter 30. Looks alot like a modified 18 watt? Add 2 EL84’s
Parallel 12ax7- tone/bass-volume w/dual brightness
Treble/ cut control
I bet they really sound good

They sound great.

The topology is:

Parallel triode preamp -> variable coupling cap "bass" control -> treble peaker -> Volume -> bright switch -> Vox PI -> Cut "treble" control -> 4xEL84 running lowish voltages. Biased at 50R/220uF, like an AC30.

I built an amp 2 years ago with so much similarities and didn’t even know. It’s running ECL82/6F3P and 6N2P. 1 parallel to tone to volume to 1/2 6N2P to long tailed pair to cut control. Using the triodes in the ecl for the phase inverter to a Hammond 18 watt Marshall output transformer. 300 volts on the power plates. Zeners to cut the screen to 190 volts. Solid state rectifier. Fixed bias
It sings. 9 watts rms. 16ish ttr. I thought it was original. Named it WCV (my wife’s initials)

Sounds like a 1965 to 1967 Univox U45 model but with a tone stack.

Oh yes, I forgot that the Songwriter is SS rectified as well, but cathode bias.
