Replacement PT for 5D6-A Bassman

Post by Deric »

I've got a 5D6-A Tweed Bassman that has had a very poorly done PT replacement. The replacement is too small for the cut out in the chassis and only one 5u4 was wired up as I suspect the transformer had a hard time with the current demands of 2 x 5u4 rectifiers.

I've been digging around the 'net and cannot find a verified part# or verified specs for the original. I suspect it's the same as used in the 5E6 but not sure.

Heyboer can do a one off reasonably enough but I'd like to get as close to original spec as possible.

Thanks!

Well how many watts does the amp pump out as is?

Does it make atleast 40 watts RMS?

Is this a customers amp?

If it's power output is good you could use a 5AR4 and it's one less amp of heater current would lessen the load on the PT for sure, and yes the 5AR4 can handle the current as my 1971 Sun Sonaro with 2 6550s pumps out 60 watts RMS and 90 peak easy and has never blown the recto!

I have in the passed added a separate small 5 volt , 6 amp trans just for the two recto's and there is room for such.

Did you check or call Mercury magnetics for the PT?
If they have or can make you one ( which I am sure they can!) just be ready to spend about 180 bucks if they have one on the shelf!

I see that the original Fender PT number is 8087 and Classic tone list a model 40-18029 as a replacement for 100 bucks.

No, the PT sold online for the single rectifier tube amps is no good for this. Have one made by Heyboer, that is what I did when I needed one. Or add a 5V 3A transformer if you are in a rush.

Thanks Jelle. That's exactly what I'm finding too. The 8087 is only 3A on the 5v winding and is too small for the cutout in the chassis. The chassis cutout is 3.0" x 3.75" like a Twin. I think the 8087 was used in the 5F6-A with a smaller cutout and a single rectifier.

Jelle, I've been emailing with Phil at Heyboer. Any chance you recall the spec - or even better yet you're part # - for the PT you had made?

Thanks for the help!!!

Just a quick update for anyone searching ....

Heyboer part # HTS-7157-M

Transformer installed. Amp up and running. Possibly the best sounding Bassman I've ever played!
