What to build next?

Post by arjepsen »

Argh, I really need help deciding what amp I should build next. (I KNOW you know the feeling  )

I currently mostly use a TC-15 (2xel84 version of a matchless DC30) that I built.
I've also built an october club from the info on the ax84 forum. (Still tweaking that one a bit, since I find it tooo bright).
So for a new amp, I've been looking at building either a rocket, or something similar to a hoso56 / 65 amps soho.
However, Ive also been eyeballing something similar to a komet 60. I like the tones I hear on demos, and would'nt mind something different than the voxish tones the previous mentioned amps have.
I've also been drooling a bit over the tones I hear from the divided by 13 amps - specifically the ones using the pentode front end, but there's not a lot of schems available for those... :-)

So... HELP me decide :-)

Regards.

I built a TC-15 too. LOVE that amp, especially in Matchless mode.

I find it odd though that you find the October to be "too bright" when you have a TC-15... now THAT is a bright amp! Just messing with the bypass caps on your October's mixing resistor and your volume knob on the bright channel should help with that. Most people find the October/JTM45 to be rather dark which is why a treble boost pedal is often desired on those.

As far as what to build next... man how many times have I asked that question! Just go with your gut and if you don't like it, tear out the guts and build something else. If you built a TC15 and an October you can pretty much build anything you set your mind to so the sky's the limit!

Yeah, I even made my own ptp layouts of both of them.... and since the sky's the limit, there's toooo many choices....
which is why I asked for help

Build the K60. Loud as hell, but it is an amazing amp.

The HoSo56 is one of the most touch sensitive great sounding amps that I've played and built. I built one with EL84's but like it best with 6BM8 tubes.

One thing I have been considering is two channel preamp with a 4 x EL84 power stage. The TW rocket has a bassman like preamp. Maybe an AC30 preamp channel with higher gain/cooler 12ax7 biasing and a TW rocket preamp channel with an EL84 quad power stage.

Or maybe add an EF86 based preamp channel? Perhaps get a PT with multiple HV windings and have a double throw standby switch to select between two B+ voltages like the Tiny Terror.
