Speaker ID

Post by Smokebreak »

I busted out my childhood amp today, a '71 Super Reverb, that I used in my Rocknroll days in the early 90's. Back then I turned it all the way up. It's a glorious sounding amp that had been modded by the local guru back in the day, which essentially is push pull pot that places a large cap over the treble cap and also reduces the 3M3 a bit. Great mod. Anyways, I haven't used it in years, because I have no patience for hauling around a 4x10. My plans are to put it in a 2x10 combo, and get two 4ohm speakers, and put it to use again.
So I was playing it today, and it sounds great as ever, and I got to wondering about the speakers. The cones have 45105-2, and an the side of the magnet w/ black frame is a white sticker that has 55-715.
Some quick googling tells me Eminence, but that's all I really know.
Does anyone know what these speakers were, and what, if any, were they replaced with in the newer Eminence line? Or maybe what speakers are similar? Here's a picture of someone else's that I believe to be the same. They sound fantastic. Very warm, articulate, punchy. All the speaker buzzwords in one ;)

Can you post up a picture of the white sticker?

You can ask Eminence, go to their webite & pitch your query. Couple years ago they had a guy on staff who was sorta the speaker "concierge", took all kinds of questions from the public & gave good answers. Of course that had to end, but afaik Emi's still good about answering, and only keeps secrets of "proprietary" custom-ordered speakers otoh they'll direct you towards which available speakers most closely resemble the custom jobs.

Yup,Eminence!
Post up a picture of the cone side and I can then tell you what would be close for a replacement.

I contacted Eminence once with info from one of there tags from a speaker with a massive 95 oz mag made in the mid 80s and all they could tell me was that it was likely rated for 300 watts.

Ah yes! The Eminence version of the ELectro Voice SRO model , but with a 5 rib cone !

As far as I know there is nothing off the shelf for this in the Eminence line right now , but for the swap thing driver with its big 150 watt voice coil, but it does not have the same cone, but I will look again for you.

Weber makes something that is close, or can make your something near dead on, or you may beable to turn up a used Mesa Boogie black shadow speaker which was real close to the EV driver.

Ok great! So these would be Emi's version of the ceramic SROs, which were essentially EV12Ls, correct?
I see weber has a Michigan, both Alnico and ceramic, which look like they are Weber's EVs
