Transformers and HIPOT testing?

Post by Mr. dB »

Do transformer makers routinely HIPOT test their products? I ask because I just got a set of transformers made by Heyboer, and when I opened the box they had a smell that made me wonder if they've seen some serious voltage?

Weber claim they HIPOT test all their xfomers to 4,000VDC

(Blurb at botton of page https://www.tedweber.com/w022723 )

Not sure about the Heyboer equivalents, but I imagine so, because Weber markets the Heyboer stuff as 'upmarket equivalents' of their own xformers.

I've used a number of Heyboer (as well as Weber) OTs in my builds and I really like them.

Are you sure it's not the fresh lacquer that you smell? I've gotten plenty of transformers from them and the only times I have noticed a smell was if the transformers were shipped the day after they were lacquered.

I'm sure you're right, but these came from a vendor not straight from Heyboer so I'm not sure how "fresh" they are. They just had that ozone-y kind of smell, particularly the power transformer.

Anyway, they're now mounted in a 18W/1974 clone that I'm re-doing.

Depends on the manufacturer, some type test, some sample test based on qty, usually depends on the purchase specification.

Manufacturers who hipot test 100% of their transformers will be sure to tell you about it, I think.

You could call Heyboer and ask.
